Re: recommendations for waders

Simms Headwaters for $250 here, http://www.mrfc.com/MadisonRiverShopping/SearchResult.aspx?CategoryID=4 I have used the Redington Sonics for a couple for years now and can say they are very well made. Whatever kind you buy, make sure they fit you, a good deal on waders that don’t fit you right are n...

Re: Mono vs Fluoro

I have used both fluorocarbon and mono tippet material over the years. I’m now using mono for all my fishing needs. I have had knot failures, and breakage between the knots with fluoro, not so with mono. And the best fly fisherman I have ever had the pleasure to fish with uses mono all the time, and...

Re: New fly rod and reel

I suggest you go cast several rods in your price range before you buy one. Everybody here has their own favorites, it might work for them, maybe not you. I can’t remember ever casting a bad modern day factory fly rod, and I get to cast way more than most ever will. There are a lot of good fishing ro...

Re: New Orvis Glass

I also enjoy fishing glass rods; my first rod was an old Philipson glass 7’ 6” 5 wt I purchased from Dale’s Hackle and Tackle. I have fished the new Lamiglas, Hardy’s, Redington’s and Orvis glass rods. They all are fun rods to fish, and are a welcome change from the ultra-fast action graphite rods t...

Re: Noob from pasadena, ca

You might want to check out this club that is right in your backyard, I have taught a few casting classes there and I was impressed with the members of the club.

Re: Parking pass questions

My local trailhead a few miles east... http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h324/Tmanson001/image_zps075cbfcc.jpg ;) It does make me feel warm and fuzzy to pay fees that pay someone to see if I paid my fees.   That is one of the funniest lines I have heard in a long time....

Re: Parking pass questions

John is right, most places along the roads in the SBNF don't require a pass to park. If an area doesn’t have any improvements such as trash cans, restrooms, picnic tables, you don’t have to display a pass. It was decided in a court case a few years ago. Congress authorized the Adventure Pass to coll...

Re: Quick guide search question. More defining questions

You might want to check out Ralph and Lisa Cutter Fly Fishing School; it is based in Truckee and Nevada City. From what I have been told it is one of the best in the country. Here is a link to their website. http://www.flyline.com/ And here are a few reviews on Yelp. http://www.yelp.com/biz/californ...

Re: Quick guide search question. More defining questions

Welcome to the forum, sorry to hear about the loss of your brother. Good to hear finally you want to get back out on the water. The difference is the emphasis of a clinic will be on teaching predetermined techniques first and catching fish second, and it could be run by guides. A guide will take you...

Re: Flybox Labels

Mike that only works if, A. you drop it and it doesn’t sink, and you are able to grab it before it drifts away B. someone who finds it is honest, C. someone finds it and the hooks aren’t all rusty. I prefer to not take that chance. I find that there are times when I’m on the water and I need a third...

Re: Light Weight Shooting Head?

I should clarify my last post; you will not continue to overload the rod with a shooting head and mono running line. The mono line does not add much weight to the cast like a normal flyline would as you continue to increase your casting distance. A mono running line does create a few problems though...

Re: Light Weight Shooting Head?

You might try a Wulff Triangle Taper. They shoot very well and also will work for other standard fishing needs; they make an intermediate and full sink and a sink tip. Personally I think a 3 wt is way too small to cast a sinking line and streamers, but I don’t know a thing about casting. ;) Over loa...

Re: Fires in NC San Diego

I heard on the news that they suspect a serial arsonist is responsible for most of the fires in San Diego County. If that is true and they catch the SOB they should slow roast the moron, jail is too good for him!
