Re: The Water Explodes - how to land that fish

I think it's what you do beforehand is what increases your chances of landing that fish, and there's a lot of luck involved after the fish is hooked that you cannot control. I have a habit of not re-tying and checking my knots, especially when the bite is slow. I can't count the number of times I'v...

Re: One of our members has been robbed

Sorry to hear about Curtis problem with scumbags ripping him off. When we were looking for a place to move to we checked out Albuquerque, but the high crime issue convinced us to look elsewhere. Curtis’s repeated theft issue confirmed our research. When I get back home in March I’ll get a reel and f...

Re: Tanuki Tenkara and general tenkara comments

Here is my experience with Tenkara fishing. I bought one a few years ago. It sounded like a good idea at the time but in reality it was a mistake. I Euro nymph fish 95 percent of the time and I carry a rod designed for Euro nymphing. I figured a Tenkara rod would be a good backup rod to carry with m...

Re: The New Next Normal.....

That about sums it up, over the last twenty years there are things that I crossed off the list and don’t do anymore because of injuries or the old body saying “nope”. Here are just a few, motorcycles, road & mountain bikes, skiing, backpacking, chasing chukers, and basketball. When it comes to f...

Re: Line Recommendations

John, Rio Grand fly line may be a better choice for that rod. It is designed for fast action rods and will load the rod easier at all distances because it is half a wt heavier. https://www.rioproducts.com/products/floating/rio-grand Rio Gold is a true wt flyline and works better with rods that are n...

Re: 8 1/2 or 9 foot?

I have several 5wt rods and I always grab the 8’6” 5wt when I want to fish a 5wt rod. It is lighter in weight, inherently more accurate and just feels better in the hand to me. The 9’ rod may cast a little further and may make on the water mends a little easier. When I have fished in that part of th...

Re: Rattlesnake protection

I haven't tried this but I was told that if you play Michael Jackson's song "Beat It"real loud while walking in snake country will freak them out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRdxUFDoQe0 ;)

Re: How to create leaders

Jon,
Thanks for the link, But there is no way you can tie 6x tippet to 40 lb with a blood knot and expect it to hold. A Slim beauty knot would be a much better choice...

Re: Low Cost CNC Chinese Reels???

Something to try to convert to left hand wind. Inside the spool you can see a locking clip holding the bushing in place. Remove the locking clip and then the bushing. Flip the bushing over (they are usually reversible) and reassemble. That might work to convert to lefty. :bananadance: :bananadance:...

Re: Low Cost CNC Chinese Reels???

Wow, those are really inexpensive reels. If I was to buy one I would go with the seller with the higher feedback. For the price I don’t think you can’t go wrong, but you’ll probably get what you paid for. If it is junk send it back, the seller has a 30 day return policy. But it might cost as much to...

Re: 2017 IFTD / ICAST Show Report - Photo Heavy

Thanks for the post, I have never been to that show, it looks a lot better than the Fred Hall Show in Long Beach. I have a Ty-Rite tool, use it always, along with a Ketchum Release tool and a EZ lap hook file.

Re: A Huge Lesson

I prefer a German Shepard, they will deter most low lifes to not even f with you. These days bad guys don’t seem to be afraid of taking on cops anymore and all cops carry guns. But most don’t like the idea of getting bit by a big dog. Trust me I have seen it first hand more then once. Last spring Ka...
