If you don't want the reel on the rod, buy a tenkara rod. He was fishing perfect water for a rod without a reel. Simple and effective.

I've been using them for years. Can rig without them now. Well I could but I get in a bad mood. I have a bunch on hand all the time and I highly recommend them. It's so easy to change tippet and the nice thing is you never cut the leader unless you break off at the ring.
