Re: Self Inflating PFD

Up here we have all sorts of problems with their fulfillment department. "Fulfillment" in a pig's eye! It can take several weeks for them to get around to shipping something. I'm pretty sure anything headed for Alaska gets tossed in a pile, and it sits until they have collected enough for ...

Re: Self Inflating PFD

Ah man.... I didn't even think of Amazon and free Prime shipping. While I was in town today I bought 4 more for our boat at the local "good" price of $129 each. We took 4 from the boat south with us for our Florida boat, and needed to replace them. Nobody, and I mean nobody, gets onto our ...

Re: Self Inflating PFD

So you guys useing the standard tupe don't have any chafeing problems on your neck working a rod in the sun all day? Not a bit with the Mustang. It fits low down past your shirt/jacket collar. Not even an issue in a t-shirt. Got a couple a little cheaper from Austin Kayak and ended up giving them a...

Re: Self Inflating PFD

Mine are ultra comfortable and I don't even know I'm wearing them. Far safer and superior to waist pack types IMNSHO (suspender types will turn you face up if knocked out). Oh yeah. The belt type almost drowned a buddy of mine while he was float tubing. Good thing my wife and I were close by in our...

Re: Need help with 1st Cali fly fishing trip!

If you want an encounter with the distinctive Kern River Rainbow, go upriver from Kernville to the Johnsondale Bridge, park, and hike upstream. It's easy walking on an improved trail, and the further you walk the generally better the fishing. It's one of my favorite rivers to fish in all of the West...

Re: To Those Who Have Served

Luc-I can only imagine what a parent goes through with someone in the service. The reunion will be a sweet one. Nice reunion for us to have him and the crew back safe. They arrived a few days late for Veterans Day but we were there to meet them. I'm proud to brag that Captain Randall is our son-in-...

Re: The wife is really on to me now.

You make me glad I married so well. My wife grew up behind the counter of her family's sporting good store. She thinks all this stuff is normal and a great investment! :P Down side is that most things from fly rods to shotguns to muzzleloaders have a very short life span in my hands. If she tries it...

Re: Topwater GT.

Yeehaw!!!! Tying a fly that big is only half the battle. Next issue is casting it!

Coincidence or not, our best topwater fly for tarpon, jack travally, amberjack, red fish and snook this winter was a black Gartside Gurgler about 4" long and tied on 3/0 hooks.

Re: 8 1/2 or 9 foot?

TFO Axiom 2? As much as I like the Axiom II, I like dealing with TFO even better. Their warranty service is simply outstanding. We manage to break a few fly rods each year. Doing so with other brands can put you out of action for months, even if their warranty work is free (rare these days). You ju...

Re: 8 1/2 or 9 foot?

Oh yeah. You'll grow into it fast. Spend half that or less and you really get what you pay for, and that's not necessarily a good thing.

Re: 8 1/2 or 9 foot?

I'm going to speak up for Temple Fork's new Axiom II rods . This winter I've been using three of them- an 8WT, a 10WT and a 12WT right alongside the best from Sage, Winston, Loomis and Orvis. The guide I fish with regularly here in Florida was so impressed with mine that he offloaded his Orvis and L...

Re: 8 1/2 or 9 foot?

I tend to longer rods for a couple of reasons. I like the extra "clearance" on back casts when wading deep or sitting in a float tube. But for more general uses, the longer the rod the better for line mending and roll casting. Since I do a whole lot of both, I find moving to a shorter rod ...

Re: Rattlesnake protection

Another good use for the walking stick: When you come across a snake in your way, slowly poke the stick down into the center of all those pretty snake coils. Then make like Tiger Woods and give the stick a good swing to launch the snake off the trail or across the creek. Done deal. Had a strange ni...

Re: Rattlesnake protection

Two thoughts as the former medical ranger when I was serving with the USNPS. 1) An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure 2) The rattler that gets you is the one you never see In grad school I did two years of field work in a tributary of the Trinity. The rocky hillsides we SERIOUS rattlesnak...
