I use an indicator much more often than not, probably because of the water I fish most frequently. If I'm on a smaller, mountain stream I never fish just nymphs, I always use a dry fly or a dry with a dropper. On something like the Kern or the Owens I usually use an indicator, but that is more habit...
Hmmm, I fish with a Sage rod that cost more than $600 (Z-Axis 4wt). Some of the time I have an incredible day. If I had a creel fish would be practically leaping into it. Other days it is all I can do to keep the skunk at bay. I'm not sure which category I fit into! I wonder if I should contact Sage...
I'm not familiar with the Sparkle Plenty Ariel, is that a dry fly? It sounds like you were using three flies, was that three nymphs (like a Czech rig) or a dry with two droppers? (Sparkle Plenty, Tungsten Grey Bead and Red Squirrel Tail).

Hmm, the National Weather Report for the Sierra Nevada mountains shows heavy snow warnings for 3500 - 4500 feet. Everywhere else it is supposed to be warm and sunny. Bummer.
