Re: How to create leaders

Jon, Thanks for the link, But there is no way you can tie 6x tippet to 40 lb with a blood knot and expect it to hold. Agreed. Slim Beauty is a good suggestion, but about as strong and even faster is to double the lighter leader, then use that to tie a double surgeon with the heavier. We're joining ...

Awwww..... You see right through us! :bananadance:

But boats are like fly rods. One is never enough!

Re: Redington Vice 907

Speaking of 6-weight rods, if you're ever in the right place and time in the Pacific Northwest or points further up the globe, run don't walk to the nearest river with pink or humpbacked salmon. At 3 to 8 pounds or so, they're perfect fish for 5-6WTs and they return to rivers in the millions. It's n...

Re: Redington Vice 907

Hey BB, thanks for chiming in! Are you on a FL forum? I'd love to follow your catching down there. Andy I haven't had much time to sort through them and see which suits me best. I'm pretty much anti-ad and anti-politics on fishing forums, so that narrows the choices too. Last winter was kinda busy ...

Re: Redington Vice 907

Next up a fast action 10wt for some big bonito and yellowtail out in the big deep blue. After that a 12wt for some real fish..... Gotta put in a pitch for the Temple Fork TiCrX in both 10WT and 12WT. Right in your price range and a better backbone for big fish than rods costing a whole lot more. Th...

Re: Most worthless thing in all of fly fishing

Felt is banned up here in AK, so we've been dancing with the alternatives. You're right on the money about those Corkers. Their studded versions are a vast improvement, but best we've found by far are the Simms with their screw-in carbide stars or whatever they call them. Really take to the bottom a...

Re: Keep the rubber side down

Good looking rig. Simple and clean. Just a heads up: Bud up here built much the same, and ended up making a second set of forks housing a very wide tire. Uses the bike tire for hard surfaces, the wide tire for soft sand, mud, etc. He found that with the weight of his pontoon boat and all the "s...

Re: Brown Bear Kenai

Yeah. They're a small part of the population and are usually serious pigs. That was the guess by the bios on Jan's 63# version, but we never popped a scale to check. Another landed by a bud the year before and just nudging 72# had that extra little ring on its scales.

Re: Brown Bear Kenai

Yeah I did. Weird enough, it's not just the Kenai. Same thing seems to be happening throughout the range of the kings. Lotta head scratching going on. Talking to the bios I trust and respect most, they're guessing ocean conditions more than any genetic change. The biggest fish in any run usually hav...

Re: Advice on Off Road Rescue Gear

I got a Viair 85P high volume inflator, couple bottles of Slime, and a plug kit, so not anticipating having to lift if at all. There ya go. And don't be shy with the plugs if you get a bigger hole. If one plug isn't big enough, add another and another. I've had as many as four plugs side by side in...

Re: Going Stir Cray-Cray (the cool way to say "crazy")

Go for it! That's why the fishing elves invented rain gear and fleece longjohns for waders. Here's a bit of encouragement. Got a nice surprise yesterday while wading for redfish here in sunny Florida--- in spite of a windy forecast. Sometimes the weather guys just get it all wrong. The wind was slow...

Re: Advice on Off Road Rescue Gear

I wouldn't use the red ones (Handyman) on a pickup unless the bumper is reinforced. My brother spent a lot of time down there and was happiest with a small "floor" jack reminiscent of what you see in repair shops. Flat enough to get under an axle even when buried, but quick enough to be wo...

Re: How Do You Keep Your Flies Organized?

How do you manage your flies, especially if you're a 'hike 4 miles to fish 100 yards" type of fly fisherman and a half day pack is what I usually use? Only system I've found is to sort them into bigger "stock" boxes by type at home: streamers, wets, nymphs, dries, etc. Bigger deal is...

Re: My Saturday aka Wheres my boat?

What a tough day.... Wow. Good you were able to get out on the water in any case. On the runaway boat, we outfitted ours with little 1# anchors from Cabelas or some such. Immensely useful on the water, but also at the beach. Every time we go ashore we toss them out. Even if we're only going to be go...

Re: Czech/Euro set up

Number one for me is a lightweight rod with just the right reel weight to balance that long length out in front of you. If your reel is too light, the rod is going to feel tip-heavy and even a 2-weight is going to turn into a burden by the end of a long day. Hit it just right and the rod will feel v...
