Re: Lightweight hiking shoes?

Can't go wrong with Merrell's.
I bought a pair of their rock climbing shoes for light hiking and after 2 years they are still holding up well.
The sole is soft and very grippy, yet they are still not worn out.
Heavy hikers I go to Vasque.

Re: Floatant Testing

It funny that I use Loon Aquel, Shimazaki, and Frog B@tt. I usually start with the dry fly and apply Aquel, then I work some Frog B@tt in with the brush. After it get water logged or a fish takes it under I use the shake to dry it out. I really like the Frog B@tt brush as once the fly gets wet or sl...

Re: Definition Of Insanity

May I suggest hiring a guide or bribing someone who is successful into mentoring you. Steelheading is not impossible, but there are some basics beyond Trout fishing. I know many Steelheaders that had a flat learning curve until they got help from successful fishermen. The most important thing is to ...

Re: Article on John Gierach

John is among the very best there when it comes to telling you a story and making you feel not so much as you've read it, but remembering it like you were there. That is the art of his writing and why I own all his books. You know, I enjoy re-reading them from time to time. And yes, they are that go...

Re: Yellowstone and Silver Creek Preserve

Depending on when you are going in June you maybe still in runoff in Yellowstone. They have had about 150% of normal snow pack up there and runoff could last through the middle of June or later depending on how much snow comes this spring and when. You might call flyshops in Gardner or West Yellowst...

Re: California Heritage Trout Challenge

Sounds like fun. 3 Cutthroats and 8 Rainbows to choose from for the 6 species to qualify.
I think the real challenge would be catching them all and having that be the certificate.

Re: Laid off

There's always a bright side to everything.
Now you have time to do a little fishing to decompress.
Good Luck!

Re: Tacky Fly Box

It actually looks pretty good. I have shied away from foam boxes because of my friends telling me about flys falling out of their slots and loosing them when opening or closing up the box. Silicon rubber use instead of foam is a great idea. I think I will look for these boxes when they hit the marke...

Re: Fishusa.com

I have used several on-line fly shops with good results.
One is right in your neighborhood "The Fly Shop" in Redding California.
I am usually just buying the basics, but I have always received ordered in short periods of time.

Re: Pray for rain/snow or learn to fish for chickens

I like "Cat" fishing myself. Mittens is always ready to pounce.
Although I did have an interesting encounter fishing for a Mockingbird one afternoon in the front yard.

Re: Pay it forward

I gave one of my flyrods to my niece's new husband for Christmas.
That is only the second one I have given away in my lifetime.

Re: Anything you don't like......

The thing I don't like about flyfishing..... The more I have explored in the mountains the more I realize my favorite places are in the backcountry and at high altitudes. It is getting tougher and tougher for me to get into some of the places I found over the decades of exploring. I want to go back ...

Re: Fly Fishing Film Tour - Feb 8th

I go and see the film every year. We are having the film shown literally on the banks of the Guadalupe Feb 22 during GRTU's TroutFest. I really enjoy seeing all the film shorts. I've bought several of the full length versions because of these films. Good Stuff for sure!
