I seem to remember the ones I've lost better....

I absolutely LOVE the hero shots that proliferate the internet especially the impossibly large fish coming from little streams and creeks yet, while I have pictures and even some video of my own, the memory that I joyfully play and replay in my mind was the one that got away on Silver Creek. Being f...

Re: Backpacking Coffee Review

Possible heretic.... I still use the "Taster's Choice" or Nescafe instant packets. $1 at the 99 cent store (?) for 7 cups. Minimal weight, minimal trash/impact. The Nescafe reminds me of the coffee machines in many of England's and Europe's train stations of which I have fond memories. The...

Re: Sunglasses Help?

Maui Jim sunglasses are just my favorite. Unfortunately their prescription glasses are crazy expensive but thanks to my work's medical savings account (cash for co-pays, etc.) I've saved enough for a pair of their low light HT glasses. I do wish they were glass though. I don't mind the weight especi...

Re: Orvis Superfine Touch 8'6" 5wt. or 9'0" 6wt.

Since I started using 4wt.s a lot, I skipped up to 6wt for my "big" rods. I have soft and stiff 4wt.s which I use 90% of the time and when I want to launch streamers or reach out consistently to 60+ ft or so, I pull out a stiff 6wt. So my question that I had to answer was do I need a delic...

Re: Studs

A lot of good info and I have and do use studs on my Simms BUT, the studs have been responsible for so many dry-rock-complete-loss-of-traction falls that I don't use them on freestones like the Kern and rarely miss them on the Sierra streams I fish. I'll continue to play with the patterns of dispers...

Re: Which knot do you use?

It's mostly a matter of the knot I know how to tie well and quickly. I've been practicing using a few "new" knots while I'm out but for the last 20+ years, a Surgeon's knot and a clinch knot have served me very well. I'm digging the Uni Loop but it takes me a while and uses (for me) a bit ...

My 389 is one of my favorite rods. Get it and fish it. You'll enjoy it.

Re: Lure vs Fly

Oh well, that fly fisher had a lot of opinions and very little game. Good thing I just don't care.

Re: Gulp!

Sorry, the climate changes and never stops changing. Never has and never will stop changing. The Ice age ended without man's industrial revolution and it came on without man's industrial revolution. The Earth does not recognize carbon credits. If we're concerned about carbon dioxide, plant more plan...

Re: C&R, 10 Tips for a Successful Release

Great stuff! I do my best to hold my breath while the fish is out of the water figuring that if I'm running out of breath... the fish may be as well. I have no scientific backing for that but it helps me to remember that their environment is in the water, not out of it.

Shooting Heads

Finally after so many years of fly fishing I got some shooting heads. Targeting trout, what connection is the "best" for connecting the tippet to the mono end of the head? A perfection loop? Add more butt section and nail knot it together? Just curious for suggestions.

Re: Fueled Leaders

I'll second the satisfaction of making your own fishing equipment and supplies... although the 2 furled leaders I purchased 5 or more years ago and still going strong. I don't use them every time I fish but, I use them often and appreciate them.
