Not sure what grade aluminum Patagonia uses - whether it has manganese or other additives. It would make a difference in how it machines and wears. Maybe start with 6061 aluminum. I'll second Benny's ideas of getting together for beer and tying / hitting the surf - or any other event. Beyond low water and time of year, it seems the folks may just have less time as the economy gets stronger. A few local events could be fun though.
