Man, that's quick. He sure goes light on the dubbing. Makes me think I'm over-dressing a bit.

I was noticing that too. I'd say, don't sweat it too much or tie some that are chubby and others that are thin. I do wish the clip had a soundtrack heh heh! All that said, that was a ridiculously fast tie and so mind-bogglingly perfect ... I am not worthy! I am not worthy!

You think that's fast, watch the Copper John video or the Half Dozen Salmon Eggs (in less than four minutes) video he has there.
How do you tie the fly to your hooks without killing them with the thread? I keep cutting them in half.

 His hands are a blur when he wraps the wire. On the Adams, he looks like he's going at a relatively normal pace. For the Copper john, you can definitely tell he's going for speed....but the fly still looks better than my best attempts. :?

Couple comments. I like the way he ties off the hackle on the para Adams. Personally, I prefer the thin, tight bodies to shaggy, thick ones.......on flies! This video confirms to me, using clipped partridge fibers is easier, and quicker, than a V notched, single feather, for Cjs.

for imitating may fly's, i like slender bodied flies. that adams he tie's is sweet. i've had para- hoppers that were store bought , have the hackle come undone after a fish or two. those hopper's apeared to be tied off the same way he ties off that adams.no , i can't be sure ,but it was the tied off end of the hackle every time ,and the in tact flies that i still had did not appear to be tied off at the head. artin, thankyou for that link. i really enjoyed that. as for charlie craven-- chuck- you the man !

I think I would like tying much more if I were that amazingly awesome

Yea, I'm with you B,
the body is very slender! I do think that it's a personal preference thing though... I used to tie ultra neat flies....Lately though I have been a little more into shaggier flies. I dub the body of my Adamses with hares dubbing, I make it as tight as poss. but it still holds its shaggy appearance somewhat.
I also dig the biot bodies too, although I haven't tied an Adams with one for a while.

Don't swat it too much Buggravy!

Darrin,
I saw that one right after  I figured you guys would find them... impressive I must say!

I agree with the CJ's partridge fibers... much faster! I was looking for a way to tie off the hackles that don't look very messy as they do on all my para flies... all these years of tying and I still didn't know to do that....
I like the way he tied off the hackle, makes for a neater tie.

But I must be concerned about tying it that way, Duck brought up a good point with the hackle coming undone.. Nothing a bit of glue on the post wont take care of I would think... :?:
Any thoughts?

He was missing the DRINK!

How can you REALLY enjoy fly tying without the drink......This guy is definitely OC!

And, as others have said, way too skimpy on the dubbing, I like mine with meat on them!

BTW, what happened to the Brown Hackle?

Still, all in all, ridiculously fast!

Did you notice that he is tying left handed when he's right handed? In his book, which is awesome, he challenges everyone to tie lefthanded which is the opposite of which us righties naturally do. His theory basically is why would you use your off hand to do complex things like hold materials and waste your good hand only wrapping thread?

Thanks for the links! They're are bookmarked now.

Mr. Craven is a * good.. Because he's a Commercial Tyer.. so being faster makes you better $$$$$ I am slower, somewhat, now that i haven't tyed Big Orders in 14 years...

However remember No one is standing behind you with a Gun threatening to kill you if you don't tye that Parachute Adams in 2 minutes.. Take Your Time to do Your Best Job possible...

Yeah, Most every beginner Tyer always puts way too much Dubbing on their flies... I always teach in my Beginner Classes that "Less is More".. always blows them away when they see how little Dubbing I apply, and the Resulting Body after it's spun and wrapped.... It's the Only Way to dub.. ;) 8-)

I've used his technique to tie off parachutes and it does leave the head of the fly nice and clean, but I did have one of them unwind. When I was first figuring out how to do it, I think I was doing it differently than he does which may explain why it came apart. I don't usually use cement on small flies, but it would probably help.

He wrote an excellent article on how to do this in Fly Fisherman July 2008.
