where on the kern

just seeing if i can get some help i want to take my gf fly fishing i finally talked her into trying it but not sure where to go i dont want to set her up for failure any recomendationswill be great thanks for your time

The Kern has been really hard going for the past month or so... Maybe this wet weather will help. I dont know.

Stop in the fly shop in Kernville and talk to Bill or Guy. They can point you in the right direction on what flies are working and where to go. Or if you want to get a guide, Guy is the man.

I personally wouldn't go to the Kern--especially in the winter. I'd take her to the Owens in February or March. It fishes very well then and if you hired a guide--ie like David--you'd be put on a lot of fish and her first experience would be a good one. Also, the O is a lot easier to wade than the Kern. Not nearly as intimidating, and there are some very good dry fly hatches in both those months during banker's hours--11:00 to 2:00--when it is warmest during the winter.

The Kern is busting everyones chops right now and is having normal winter weather and the water is cold!!! Last winter was warm and except for January it fished well all winter on dries. Mid Feb it will start up again.

Spend a weekend in Bishop, fish the Lower Owens. The Kern is too cold and too clear right now. It will be fairly hard to find willing fish and have a fun time on the Kern until the water warms a bit. If you can, call up David and arrange a float trip on the Lower Owens. He will find you fish to play with.

Seriously. I've heard the Kern is difficult this year. I would go to the Owens for these reasons:
1. she can stand on the banks of either the lower or upper Owens and fish with out boots or waders
2. Feb the river should begin to fish well with better hatches and warming waters
3. The Sierra Trout Magnet shop is up there and David or Beryl Rea are both fantastic guides-661.364.6981
4. She could float the Owens for 1/2 day for as much $$$ as some guides charge for Walk and Wade...AND catch more fish=success= lets go again!
5. There are some really quality eateries!
a. Imperial Gardens
b. Yamagato's (sp)
c. Whiskey Creek
6. Inexpensive motels that are really clean and quiet

c. El Rancho- UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT! back to being basic and clean, no druggies living there.
7. Great little movie theater
8. Casino
9. Romantic scenery
10. We all love the Owens!

or you could get an amazing sandwich from the Mahogany Smoked Meats shop at the north end of town. Best B.L.T. ever.
