Nice... The Comet fly is the go to fly for steelheading on teh Russian River (CA). The ones I have used are tied with a chain bead head... added weight I guess and are tied very sparse..

Oh and if the fishing gets slow... the wineries in Sonoma County are better than Napa! :bananadance:

awww... my home... Thanks, I always enjoy anything to do with the Russian

Nicely written, Dean. Interesting bit of history there. :D
How do you tie the fly to your hooks without killing them with the thread? I keep cutting them in half.

Im living in Bakersfield, spent the first 25 years of my life in the Russian... I know that river like the back of my hand... lots of hidden beaches using an alley between houses as access!

If you make it up there this next winter, let me know... I might be able to help you out...

the most productive holes I have found is one called "summer Bridge" and a little known spot near the Hacienda bridge. Wohler Bridge used to be productive, but its float boat city now.

Guerneville has some productive runs, but the river is deep and wide in this area, great spot of a drift though...

Or try at the mouth of Dry Creek (my favorite spot when they release the 1/2 pounders from the hatchery), or Cazadero creek , or casini's ranch...

Western outdoor fly shop on Santa Rosa Ave... ask for Carlo.

Great article FJ. I really enjoyed the history behind the patterns. Reading the article reminded me I haven't order Rivers Of The Lost Coast yet, so I just did. Maybe you'll get a kickback from the gubberment for stimulating the economy. ;-)

Nice article Dean. While I've not had much luck using comets, I have tied them and fished them some on the Trinity and Klamath. But then I never had much luck with silver hiltons or brindle bugs either.

You ought to put the link to your blog in your signature line. There's some good stuff in there, or is it supposed to be a secret?

Very nice article Dean, I enjoyed it very much. I recently tied some similar flies on a smaller scale and used them as Shad darts and they worked quite well fishing for Shad in the st. Johns river.
