Gee, what nice flies

Postby Papasequoia » May 25th, 2010, 2:38 pm

Has this ever happened to you? Unlike some people (*cough* Midger *cough*) I don't have dozens (hundreds?) of fly boxes all over the place. Pretty much all the flies I own are the ones I carry with me in five boxes. So, imagine my surprise when rummaging through a bunch of junk today (mostly empty split shot bags, old tippet holders, spare backing, etc.) I came across a one-sided box of dry flies all lined up in a nice, neat row. I think during one of those "how should I reorganize my fly boxes?" frenzies I put a bunch of summer type flies in a separate box. In my regular box I have Adams and BWOs and a few others, but this box is full of beetles, ants, gnats, humpys, and mosquitoes along with a few odd ones like Sierra Brite Dots and some kind of yellow parachute caddis that may be trying to imitate a yellow sally. Very cool, I wonder what else is underneath that pile of junk? :D

Oh thank heaven you found them. Just hold on to them and you can return them to me on the 1st of July :D If you find any more of my flies let me know.

This has never happened to me. I'll have to consider hiding a bunch of flies from myself sometime when I'm Drunk (so I won't remember where they are).

Sounds even better than finding a $20 bill in the jacket you haven't worn in 8 months.
Fishing is the most wonderful thing I do in my life, barring some equally delightful unmentionables.

This actually happened to me two weeks ago. With the wife in Florida I decided to take all my boxes that I stored in my vest and storage area and sort them all out in the kithen table. After about 4 hours I'm finally done and go to put them away when I find a cupfull of flies in the storage area where the boxes go. Looking at the plastic cup I remember buying them at the Trout Fly a couple of years ago. There was like 40 flies in there all hot creek and East Walker flies. I was a little mad at myself since now I had to rearrange the boxes once again, but now I'm happy i've got enough flies (for now) and won't be needing any the next time I go to the Eastern Sierras!!!

Nice find !
This happens to me quite a bit.

I have flies stashed all over the place (especially in my car) in all kinds of different boxes. I make fly boxes out of old eyeglass cases, Tupper ware, Altoid tins whatever I see usable for a fly box. I have specialty boxes for all different species of fish. Striper boxes, Corbina, general surf fishing, Barracuda, Carp, Trout (separated into dry /streamer/ nymphs), Steelhead, Tuna, Calico Bass, LMB and then to top it off I have duplicates of certain boxes I use to fish with on my paddle board.

Another place is the inside brim of my baseball cap. I stash flies in the sweat band when I don't feel like carrying a box and forget about them.

So yeah this happens to me a lot
