Keeping the tippet on the spool

Postby Flatsix » February 3rd, 2011, 3:55 pm

I've got one of those "T" shaped tippet spool holders that I keep 3-4 spools of tippet hanging from my vest or lanyard. The only problem is that the elastic holder that supposedly holds the tippet on the spool doesn't work real well and I always have loose ends of tippet that seem to multiply in length while I'm fishing.

I've seen the C&F cartridge solution $$$$ and the one made by Scientific Anglers $$$. I'm currently participating in the recession and I'm looking for a cheap solution.

What have you done to stop the fly aways??

The Reason the elastic doesn't work anymore is because with the tippet spools hanging off your vest or Chest pack, they are Exposed to the UV rays and sunlight, which dry out the elastic, destroying the stretch... I carry all tippet spools Inside my vest or Chest pack.. this protects the elastic holders and also prevents the Tippet material from being destroyed by the UV Rays as well.....

Just carry your Tippets spools inside your Vest or Chest pack... Problem solved..... ;)

I use those elastic hair things that girls use in their hair. They are cheap and hold up for quite a while.

I second what Dean said. Don't expose your tippet spools to sunlight and the elastic will last a lot longer. Plus sunlight isn't the best thing for your tippet material any ways. And as Pete said, girls elastic hair rings work quite well and are dirt cheap.

Thank you Gentlemen.

I've got a wife and 2 daughters.

There are millions of those Girls Hair Things all over my house. They are in my cars, in my garage, on the patio, in the bathroom, laundry room, behind the couch and on and on and on.

Now I know what to do with them!

I lost the elastic band on my 5x a few months ago. I replaced it with a wide rubber band. Works great!

Good advice, as usual...
