Long Beach Casting Club?

Postby anacrime » November 24th, 2012, 11:47 am

Anyone here members? For one reason or another I have never attended even though I live like a mile away. I figure I could use some tying (which I haven't done in way too long) and some casting help.

Shane-
Mark is a member as well as a few others here. He is also a Certified Casting Instructor. I took their beginning Casting course over five weeks last year and did it again this year. Improved my casting 100% (I really needed the help). Their tying and rod building programs are great as well. They also have a continual lineup of great speakers and presenters. Well worth looking into.

Shane,

There are a few members on this board that also belong to the LBCC. Their tying class is very good and I recommend you go check it out. I think it is sixteen weeks long and you will learn by some of the best tiers around, including John Van Derhoof, a Buz Buszek Memorial Award winner. You will be a very good tier by the end. The best part is it is free and you don’t have to be a member. If I lived just a mile away I would be there every day, working on my two handed Spey casting, my drive is more like 45 one way. The casting program is one of the best in the country, with both a beginner and intermediate class available every year and you also just show up to the pond at noon most weekdays and there is always someone there that can help you out. Don’t be afraid to ask. Here is a link to the tying class. http://www.longbeachcastingclub.org/classes/fly-tying

I grew up in Long Beach not far from the club and spent a lot of time there practicing casting without being a member. About a year and half ago I started spey casting there on a regular basis and decided to join the club. I've attended a few functions, but I live in south OC, so I don't make many evening things.

There are some really knowledgable guys hanging around the cabin and pond. If I could, I'd spend a lot more time casting and talking fishing.

As I PM'd you this is one of the finest clubs around, with exceptional programs and a real intent on expanding, not only the sport of fly fishing, but everyone who joins in the activities, many which are open to non-members. I don't know of other clubs that do that. We volunteer to teach the casting classes, others for the pond clean up, tying classing and to organize trips. Joe Labou is one of the master casters and in my opinion top on the list. You will learn so much in the certification class that casting will become more than just throwing a line. It's an opportunity to understand why it all happens. I also live 45 min away and can't participate as much as I want, but you... no excuse for being part of one of the finest programs in the USA... a tough statement to make, but one I'm sure can pass the mark.

Thanks for the info guys. I might crash the Fly Tying class sometime soon.
