Ocean kayak fishing

Postby Papasequoia » December 16th, 2014, 2:54 am

Not sure where to put this - I was going to put it in the joke of the day thread, but I guess here will do. Saw this on a news story (http://www.grindtv.com/outdoor/outposts ... ts-launch/) Some of the comments included in that article:

Asking commenters on YouTube what was the kayak fisherman’s first mistake, JukinVideo got answers you might expect:

“Not scanning the shore for trolls recording him.”

“Getting out of bed that sad morning.”

“Not wanting to get his feet wet.”

Other comments included:

“When I saw this video I remembered classic comedy movies.”

“Legends say that he’s still, up to this day, trying to get in that kayak.”

As for the cooler, the kayak fisherman apparently left it behind once he finally launched. No word about what happened to his fishing rod.

Nature always wins.

I had an old Sears aluminum canoe that we tried to launch from Cardiff Beach (just south of Chart House) back in college. We got swamped by an incoming wave, cooler dumped about a case beer, lost some gear. Worst part was the canoe beached itself upright and full of water. It was a nightmare trying to turn it over to get the water out, since our bailing bucket was somewhere lost in the surf zone. Plus, there were cans of beer strewn about 100yds down the beach.

I had a similar experience down at the Arch in Cabo one year, only the cooler was filled with beer. I believe it was the last time I cried.

Funny! Hopefully his buddies had his fishing gear, or at least, it wasn't too expensive. Me thinks he wasn't all that experienced with kayak launching in waves.

Whew! Given that the guy did not seem hurt, I can say with a clear conscience that I laughed a LOT.
Thanks!

At least he now knows where to not attempt a surf launch! Hopefully he learned something there. Now that I live in the middle of the country, I’m glad I don’t have to worry about launching in waves like that.

Being a surfer or some surfing experience should be mandatory to doing surf launches
But that said i have danced that waltz with a kayak and surf a few times. :bananadance:

I got my first ocean kayak in 1992 and can't count the number of times I ate it paddling in and out. No matter how good you are, you learn to tie EVERYTHING to the kayak, except yourself. We used to launch a skiff in Malibu, and flipped that a few times too. Not so fun, but always entertaining :)

Hmm…and here my first thought was Why didn't the guy filming help out instead? It's funny, but I still don't understand not helping someone out. :oo:
How do you tie the fly to your hooks without killing them with the thread? I keep cutting them in half.
