"Newbie Box" Drawing for Spring 2̶0̶1̶3̶ 2014

Postby Benny » October 31st, 2012, 6:43 am

We all know how expensive it can be purchasing flies when we first get into Fly Fishing. The cost of flies is a shock to ones pocket book at about $2.50 average price per fly in many of the local fly shops. We can browse the web looking for the best deals on flies, but even then the prices are still expensive for someone just starting out.

We lose flies to submerged branches and other obstructions in the river, we get the flies caught on trees and bushes. You're frustration increases as you keep losing flies as you start tallying up the cost, before you know it you've lost about $20 bucks worth of flies in the trees and bushes, not to mention the tiny fish that broke you off at the <oops> knot you tied. Welcome to Fly Fishing!

Here is what I'm offering to our fellow fly tyers. The "Newbie Box", just so you know this idea was sparked by PlanetTrout on another thread and I ran with the idea and started this thread. I'll donate a Grey's GS Fly Box or Boxes, just need help in filling them with some nice trout flies.

The object of this "Newbie Box" is to help out a newbie fly fisher get his fly box started. We could do one box or a couple of boxes and donate/raffle to a few newbie fly fishers.

Tim suggested a Spring 2013 deadline, I think that's plenty of time to get a couple of boxes either filled or at the very least half filled to get a newbie off to a good start on the river. What do you guys think? Let me know if it's a go, and if you want to participate.

Thanks
Benny

Good idea Benny/PT. Let me know where to send them and I'll send you a bunch of flies. I have a few extras laying around, I'm sure. ;)

Count me in Benny, I am in a fly tying kind of mood right now.
I just sent a starter box off to Hawkplayer.

I think I can do some pretty nice Spnongebobs.

And my midges are not too shabby either.

Just let me know.

I'm all for it. But I just recently sent about 100 flies to a new fly fisherman on this board and that included the box. I pulled flies that I seldom used or sizes I thought might be good. Granted I didn't separate them into the box, but instead am leaving it up to the newbie to do the leg work, while, hopefully, they try to learn the names.

regardless, I'll pitch in what ever is needed. I'll be tying up a bunch of emergers.

As for fly cost. I get 142 flies for around $75.00 from theflystop.com

This board has over 1600 members, even if only like 1 in 4 ties, and they each gave 2 flies...
Cool idea, I'm in.

I'd say whatever you guys want to send in to get a newbie started in the right direction will definitely do.

Thinking of a deadline in Spring, I'd say the end of April early May or so.

Put me down for a dozen, possibly more. Probably send 2 ea of 6 patterns.
I fish for my sanity. If I catch it, should I still practice catch and release?
