Common mistakes when fighting fish

Postby Papasequoia » November 5th, 2012, 5:49 pm

I really like the Gink and Gasoline blog, in spite of the strange name. :) Just recently they posted a nice summary of the common mistakes people make when fighting fish. I think it's a great primer for newbies to the sport and a great refresher/reminder for the more experienced.

Pffft... I didn't make a single one of those foolish mistakes when I fought and landed this hard-fighting monster...

Thanks for the link.

It got me to thinking. I think there is some primal need to land/capture the fish. Why else would so many words be assembled into coherent strings, to tell us how to do it properly.........even though the plan is to let them go afterwards. Is landing the fish, a completion of the act of fishing, or just a unconscious need to consume it. :?

I don't know, I think it's kind of like sex - once I start the act I usually prefer to bring it to its logical and satisfying end.

Just another 8 reasons why I stay within my SPL 080 "limits" and stick to fishing the small streams and creeks for smaller trout; no desire to lose my mind over what I'm doing wrong while trying to do what I think is right.

Brian,
Way too philosophical for me. I think you need to go fishing.

Looks like those guys know what they are talking about, and I've made many of those mistakes in the past. Good looking blog and photography. I'm definitely going to be checking them out more.

Nah. It's was all the candy corn I ate. Sugar buzz and all that. Jon has it right though. :bananadance:

As time goes by, I'm more interested in getting my fly back, than losing a trout. Edit that. I'm more worried about breaking the fly off and having to re-tie, than actually landing a trout. I'm tickled to death if I get a short tug-o-war, then the fly pops out. Am I strange, or have I evolved?

...yeah. I'm just lazy. :Idiot:

Seeing the orange flash of a brown trout's belly or the silvery flash of a aerialized rainbow, there's definitely the fight-flight response that kicks in... adrenaline rush, tunnel vision, heart-thumping, shallow-breathing, loss of fine motor skills, etc.

Landing the fish provides a sense of closure or a "satisfying end" as Papasequoia eloquently put it. Except I don't roll over and snore incessantly after releasing a fish.

#15) I'm not so sure. Can you say Bloopers? :kissbutt:

#10) Depends on your casting. :booty:

#5) No, I have to get a cable package that's even more expensive. :fireangry:
I fish for my sanity. If I catch it, should I still practice catch and release?

I don't get the name, Gink and Gasoline. I mean it's a catchy name and all, but I always thought you mixed Gink with lighter fluid?......... And as usual, I stray off topic. I used to read a forum that George Gehrke(founder/inventor of Gink)posted to. He was quite the eccentric character.

Since one is supposed to land a fish and release it quickly, are we to then assume that the sex is over quickly for you  :bananadance:
