I may look into some of these suggestions quite seriously as 2011 kicks in. The last year or two have found me squinting/struggling/adjusting more and more with the small and close stuff. Long distances, on the other hand, with my prescription polarized glasses remains fine. I even have a lighter pair for dusk's low light.

On a related note: I think those C&F boxes with threaders are great and intend to start using these more. The upside is that not only do they spare your eyes the "fun" but also speed things up. For example, you can have your box loaded with the key 6 flies or so for a local stream (on threaders). While the bite is hot you can "reload" more quickly if you break off a fish or a tree.

For close up I use costco brand 2.50 power cheaters--they cost around $19 for 3 pair. For bright sunlight, I use Smith or Guideline polarized sunglasses with a 2.50 power bifocal.

I had lazer surgery about 3 years ago, correcting my distance vision to 20-15. Wished I'd had it several years earlier, as now I can see those size 20 dries at 25-30 feet. Shot my near vision to heck though, as I used to tie those flies on without any need for cheaters. Alas, I could see near or far, but not both. I chose far, and it was nice to see that all the green I was seeing before surgery was actually individual tree leaves.
"Should you cast your fly into a branch overhead or into a bush behind you, or miss a fish striking, or lose him,or slip into a hole up to your armpits-keep your temper; above all things don't swear, for he that swears will catch no fish."

I turn forty-one in February 2011, a few months ago, I started to get the blurry vision. I was sitting on the couch reading The Road by Cormac McCarthy, a cool post apocalyptic tale. Anyhow I was sitting and reading this novel and I had to keep pulling the book further and further away from me, *! I start saying to myself, I think I need glasses??? I keep this up for about a week before I finally make the decision to make an appointment to see an Optometrist. A week later I see the very young and beautiful Optometrist, * she was hot, or maybe not since I can't see well. She put me behind this crazy contraption to test my eye pressure, and then gave me a vision test. Long story short, she says most people start to loose a bit of vision when they are about forty years of age, that's about right, I'm forty years old now and seeing blurry. She say I need to wear reading glasses. She said I could buy the expensive custom made glasses, or I could opt for a cheap pair from Rite-Aid, I opted for neither. I may get a pair sooner rather than later, as this is also affecting my tying on of small flies. You guys can welcome me to the club of not being able to see well...Image

Your vision was good enough to judge the Optometrist as hot though lol !!! You are not blind thankfully ;) Actually, my last one was pretty delightful too!

I was thinking about this discussion and on a related note, was also realizing that although dark colors are my preference when it comes to clothes, gear cases etc., I sometimes look into a backpack or a car trunk and see a confused array of "forms". How many times have I looked for an object and given up only to look later in the same spot and realized that the dark case it was in simply hid it it from me the first time around. I guess what I am saying is that the "battle" may be won by some other modifications too (using huge flies is another ha ha ha).

I like these for tying and for everything really. They work well. I bought mine from Orvis for $17, 50% off at the time, but I don't see that they sell them online anymore.

Benny, if you were reading The Road and you kept pushing the book away from you, it may have been a subconscious urge to push yourself away from the subject matter :o

Here are a few ideas you might try.
1. Learn to tie your knots blindfolded.
2. Don’t use any flies smaller than size 12.
3. Fish only streamers.
4. Take up golf.
If you can’t or don’t want to do any of the above suggestions than get glasses and join the crowd!
