People often wonder how Jim became a spokesperson to report on conditions when there is a forest fire. It turns out that he was working with a fire crew on a big fire one day and unbeknownst to him or those around him an ember had jumped the line and landed in his mustache. It was at about this time that the higher ups were thinking that Jim might be a good candidate for the position of spokesperson and they pulled him from the line to update some reporters for the 6:00 news.
Well, it was during this live broadcast that they began to notice smoke coming from Jim's mustache. Jim, thinking quickly, ran over to a horse trough that was filled with water and dunked in his head thus extinguishing the incipient fire. The story was a big hit on the news and Jim became a hero for single-handedly putting out the Great Mustache Fire of '78. The higher ups were so impressed with the way that he handled the situation that he was promoted to permanently become the spokesperson for forest fires over many areas in the western U.S.
Nature always wins.
