NOAA has ENSO neutral conditions in the eastern pacific through the summer of 2014 with an increasing chance for a return of El Nino conditions starting in the summer. That would mean above average rain/snow for areas from California to Texas, but not until next summer. I wish it was different.
Here in central Texas we have been in drought conditions for over 3 years. Our lakes in central Texas are in real bad shape. Medina Lake just west of San Antonio has just 5% of it's capacity stored behind the dam. Twin Butts Lake near San Angelo is virtually dry. Many of our big lakes are down 40-60' from pool.
We are praying for rain and planning on ways to get through till the rains come.

LA Times headline was 2013 was the driest year on record in the LA basin.

No rain forecast for at least the next week.

This is not good news. The snow pack in the Eastern Sierra mountains are well below avg for this time of the year. The high mountain lakes and streams will suffer as a result if we do not get some storms like now. There is still hope for Jan through March.

I keep watching the weather hoping for rain, I have not touched my SoCal streams as the tribs started to dry up. I would also like to ski at some point this season if we can get a 8-10ft base on Mammoth.

If they can ban plastic bags in California why can't we ban lawns in semi arid regions? This is absolutely maddening. I remember in the 70' 2 min showers and only doing was after 8:00 PM once a week. Come on and wakeup! I believe we've been in drought conditions for more than 10 yrs now. Isn't that correct? I'd like to know.
