Memorial Day

I'd like to thank our active and former military FFA members for their service, and to take a moment to remember those who gave all. You all have my undying respect.

Today, more than past Memorial days I've been in a "funk" thinking of my brother and of a friend
that taught me my job over "there". I don't know why it's hit me like this 46 yrs after the fact, but it did.
My thought are with all veterans and especially the families of those that didn't make it home and those that still carry the bad times with them. BobK

I fully understand what the young folks are going through in today's military and thank those that have the courage to stick with it. I am even more sincerely grateful to those who paid the ultimate price with their lives fighting for the freedoms we seem to take for granted today, and for their families who will continue to pay the price of their lost loved ones into the future.

When I was in the Marine Corps we did an operation on Iwo Jima. When I first stepped on the sand I was surprised how deep and black it was and couldn't help to think how hard it was to fight in. We eventually hiked up Mt. Suribachi passing hidden pillboxes and bunkers along the way. At the top there was a Memorial where the famous flag raising was. You could look out, down on the beaches in clear view where so many lost their lives. I was a moving experience and gave me a new perspective on what men and women will do for this country...nearly 7,000 gave their lives there.

I had an Uncle that piloted the landing craft at Normandy. Every time I see something about that day, I still cannot fathom what it took to do it.

My Dad was in the Army Air Corps, BAD 2. He was stationed at Wharton England as a radio specialist who installed radios and bomb sites on planes flown in from the States, mainly B-17s and B-25s. He helped maintain the radar installations and help ferry shot-up bombers back to their base to be repaired. He also invented a device which allowed the lead bombardeir in the group, to send a electric signal via radio, so all the bombers dropped their bombs on his activation. He's almost 94 now, and one of few remaining members of the "Greatest Generation in US History". One of the long line of Americans who put themselves in harms way so that we could all enjoy our freedoms.

Bob....I get it. As I try to write my fading memories of those two years, I find myself getting emotional about something I thought was just another adventure in my life. I have been blessed to not have too many rocks in my pack over that place like so many.
