A buddy had been asking me to take him fly fishing for his first time. I had planned on taking him up a little higher the previous weekend but it didn't work out and since the season had closed we settled on the Kern. The weather report was for possible showers Thursday night and clear Friday so we went for it. We got up there Friday morning to find out that there was a lot more rain in the upper reaches. The flow had gone from around 300cfs on Thursday to over 800cfs on Friday. The river looked like chocolate milk and you can guess how the fishing was. At least I got to show my friend how to cast a little and got him started on his roll cast and mending. We came back early Saturday after chicken fried steak and eggs at Cheryl's. It still beat working around the house .

I've had that chicken fried steak, it's excellent. Sorry about the fishing, but I'm sure your buddy appreciates the time you took to teach him! Have a great holiday season!

I think the others said it well. You got your friend a taste of what could be. Tom and I spent 4 days in the Eastern Sierra and we did a lot of casting too. Just being on the water with a friend and learning something that can last a lifetime is a pretty good reward. Way to pay it forward.
