Two questions: 1. Was it de-barbed?
2. After you pulled it out, did it catch fish?

That most of hurt. How do you like that worm pattern? I've had pretty good luck with it

Actually it didn't hurt at all. The worm is only 1/2 component of my set up. I was tying this up on to a friends line when he pulled the rod. Ahhh just a joke! It really didn't hurt. This is why it's important to know how to extract a hook properly, hard to do if you're alone.
I like this worm. Easy to tie/ cheap to tie/fast.

Ariel, please do share your no fail hook extraction technique. I have tried a few and sometimes they work out and some times they don't work out. All I can say is the ones that don't work out are a pain in the #$%^&*& !!!!!

Is that the upper owens I see behind your injury? I've never fished San Juan worms up there - if so, how do they work?

The extraction is simple, if you're not alone. Simply take a piece of 3X tippet (I like to use the heavy stuff) make a loop. Slid the loop under the upright eye and rest it against the bend of the hook. Push down on the eye of the hook until it is depressed against the skin of the offended area. (This will allow the point to follow the entry path. Simply give a sharp pull on the looped 3X in the direction of the entry and the hook will come right out. The best way to learn this is to practice on an orange or grapefruit.

Gives you an appreciation for what a fish goes through.

This really wasn't painful, but than I seem to have a nice high threshold for moderate pain.

DSF: Like all flies you need to know when to apply. They really work very well. I'm sure David knows the best application to subscribe when you get guided by him.

I've got a diagram of that process somewhere. Works great, difficult to do alone, but not impossible. Amazingly, it works quite well on barbed hooks, the holding down the eye and the direction of the pull seem to make barbed hooks slip right out. I will check my picture files and see if I can find it and post it in a separate thread. Jon
