Sabrina Basin mid October?

I’m planning on doing a 3 day backpacking trip to from Lake Sabrina to Hungry Packer Lake October 12-14, stopping at a few other lakes. I’ve never fished this area, will the fishing still be good this time of year? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

My advice is be prepared to walk on snow and ice. Weather should be starting in the cycle of Pacific storms. Not sure when the lakes start freezing over. Guessing fish might be stocking up before the winter freeze.

I love the Sabrina Basin it's simply beautiful. It's getting pretty late in the year to be hiking there unless you are an experienced hiker with good cold weather gear. I would call the Forestry permit/information office in either Lone Pine or Bishop for conditions info first. Keeping in mind that conditions can change at any time this late in the year. As far as the fishing goes it should be good and if you timed it right near the inlets you might capitalize on some spawning Brookies.

I would agree with everything Gary said and add that in addition to good cold weather gear you will need good route finding skills should you happen to get a surprise snow storm that covers the trail. Just in case. If you have those skills and the weather looks good, by all means go - fall is a great season for backpacking.

As Jon S. mentioned, it has rained and snowed some recently. As I write this in Mammoth it is 33 degrees outside. On the other hand, it wasn't much warmer yesterday and we had a couple of great hikes. We'll be heading out again today up near Bridgeport to check on the colors and maybe wet a line for a bit. Meanwhile, this was from a lengthy hailstorm a couple of days ago.

And we did get our first snow in town over the weekend, but it was just a trace. A bit more over higher elevations (above 10,000 feet).

NO snow on the ground currently at Sabrina and South Lakes and very little on the highest peaks. There's a trace of white stuff here and there but that's about it. I worked at my cabin just below South lake yesterday and it was clear and 55degrees. It is freezing at nite but the frost is gone by 10am. Fishing should be very good with lots of Brookies in the inlets. BobK

Thank you everyone for the responses. I’ll definitely be monitoring the weather reports and hopefully if it holds up I’ll catch a lot fish!
