So Cal Report | 03.15.20

Postby Bernard » March 16th, 2020, 11:05 am

A quick charge into the locals under gloomy skies. It was just what my wife and I needed. Small fish but in some cases, a great game. For example, one fish was feeding visibly and at first rising sporadically but clearly focused on something subsurface. A few good drifts with a dry proved worthless. Later in the day, as we headed out, we spied the fish still at it so had to give it a shot. This time we went to the dark side ;) with a nymph about 15" under a small indicator. Success! Big take away was the amazing variation between colors. Here's the brief report with photos: https://trouthugger.blogspot.com/2020/03/so-cal-mountains-march-15-2020-three.html.

EDIT: Date was corrected.

I love the variegated colors of those fish found fairly close together. Thanks for sharing.

The third one looks like an ETC fish. All are stunning!

The differences continue to fascinate me as well. Could be a great springtime for the So Cal locals.

Reminds me of the variations one can find in Dry Fly Creek. Glad to see you got out - I have yet to wet a line in 2020.

It was my first outing this year. I got tired of seeing all of this Pyramid p*rn so had to battle it with the local dinks!

I wish I had taken a photo, but the most drastic color variation was on the same fish. The fish had a specific spot for its lie. The location was under a dam. The forward half of the fish was dark to blend in and camouflage. The rear half was bright and shiny like a steelhead. There was a sharp line where the two colors met.

I had the impression two separate fish had been cut and joined together.

The color variations are endlessly entertaining.
