I agree with that: a leader/tippet combination about the same overall length as my rod is sort of my benchmark.

UPDATE: Tried out those leader links at long last and really love the almost imperceptible bump as it passes through he tip top. It may go without saying but these are not advisable for burly situations but for small stream applications, just dandy. Thank you Jeff.

You’re welcome!

Glad they worked for you.

In case anyone was worried about using the larger version leader-links in more “burly situations”, the following pictures of my dad and I landing Kings and Sockeyes should alleviate your doubts.

The Leader-links are extremely durable and strong for their diminutive size.

Holy Smokes! That first fish you're holding looks like an over-sized stuffed animal fish you'd get at Costco. How much did that thing weigh?

My guide said it was around 50 + pounds. He said it was probably 60 pounds before it swam 100 miles up to where I caught it in the Yentna Drainage area.

I caught it on a Winston Blank 6 weight that I built in a unnamed creek about 100 miles inland from Anchorage on a pink wog fly. Took about 30 minutes to land because he ran most of my backing out and I had to keep running downstream through the bear grass to keep up with him.

My father passed away shortly after that trip, so it was the last time we were able to fly fish together. In nine days we caught hundreds of salmon. It was a great trip to remember the man who raised me and taught me how to fly fish.

Regards,

Jeff
