Spoke with Stephen from CTS rods - We talked for a bit about the difference between the U.S. and European markets (he is in New Zealand).

Come to find out they ship a large number of 12' 2wts, 3wts, and 4wts to the UK and the like.

I am in the process of getting prices for a 11' 3wt.

The neat thing about these rods is the custom color application... any number of sections you want, and any length - they are designed for the Euro market... but Im getting one (if they are a decent price) He is supposed to send me a price list tonight.

Check out the site... they have a number of different actions... from ultra-fast all the way to fiberglass/vintage slow.

Im looking at the Affinity X in either a 3 or a 4wt...

I think a 11' 4wt would be very versatile. but I like 3wts feel.

Or I could just go nuts and get teh 12' 2wt

Not to be a devil's advocate or anything but, doesn't it go against fishing logic to have a long very light weight rod? Seems to me that most light rod fishing is on small streams where a long rod wouldn't be too functional. If you catch a bigger fish on water where a long rod would be workable wouldn't it cause too long a fight for the fish? Typical,I have talked myself into a state of confusion .

Seems to me an 11', 4 weight would be the perfect rod. JMHO that wasn't requested but, freely given as usual .

I am thinking long rod for high sticking the kern... thus the 3wt.

I have noticed that the long rods are more of a Tip action 3wt... and plenty of backbone down towards the butt to lay the wood to the bigger fish.

But with a 4wt I could use it on the lower and upper Kings... East Walker... etc...I could probably get away with the 3wt.

With the 4wt I could drag the big ugly stuff as well as midge with it.... Great, thanks Pete... now Im totally confused about what I want.

I found that the 5-6 wt long rods feel more like a broom stick... where the 3-4 have a more sensitive tip...

but thats just my limited observations. I ordered a 10' 5/6wt blank for like 26.oo bucks last year and I swore it could handle a 10wt line - Think broom stick... it turned into my practice wrapping stick.

I am leaning towards the 4wt now... If it has a good strong butt section I could probably grab steelhead with it as a switch rod as well...


The guy from CTS was pretty excited about the 12' 2wt but he is in the "Euro" market mindset.. He said 10' was a little short

a fast taper on a fast action 3wt will have the same fighting power as a slower taper fast action 5wt

So like the affinityx series has a fast taper and med/fast action... strong fighting 3wt with a soft tip.

I had a chance to cast a CTS rod. My buddy had one or two at The Fly Fishing Show. He was thinking of becoming a dealer for the rods. Not sure if he ended being one or not. IIRC, the blanks were relatively expensive(for a small company), but i've read some good reviews on them. Anyway, I think I cast a 9', 7 or 8wt. Nice, powerful rod. I was casting at the inside casting pond, so I was more concerned about not looking stupid, then really critiquing the rod.
