ultralights and featherlights

Postby aguabruja » March 11th, 2010, 2:22 pm

Alright. So I am pretty new here and I have only one post. But I read this forum alot especialy the stories about the txl spl and slt rods. And I was reading a lot of the comments on here about ultralights. I really like my Txl 0. But i thought all the 0, and 00 and 000 fly rods were called feather lights? I'm pretty sure the txl and spl and slt 0 rods they are in a class all of their own right?. My friend told me 1 and 2 weight fly rods were ultralights? I was not sure about posting this because i didnt want to start a argument like I saw in anothr subject on here but I would like to know if i'm right or not. and what other rods are really featherlight. I have not seen any more companies beside sage.

Call them whatever you want... I call them a great mutipurpose rod, all around rod.

Dan Craft builds a "0" wt as well...

But those are not the most "featherlight" of the "featherlight" family..

Featherlight to me implies certain "limitations" and the Sage line of rods have no limitations.

What's in a name? They're all fun, light rods that present light fly lines. Beyond that, feather vs. ultra vs. super... who cares.
Fishing is the most wonderful thing I do in my life, barring some equally delightful unmentionables.

I think Sage considers the newer TXL series as Trout Extra Light rods. So maybe we should call them Extra Light rods instead of Ultra Light or Feather light rods.

Well personally I never really have thought about if my 0wt SPL and SLT and my 000wt TXL were featherlight or ultralight. I will say that they are all very fun rods to fish. They all throw light fly lines well especially with nice bushy dries. They all suck at throwing weighted nymph rigs and other heavy flies (although it can be done but IMO it sucks from a casting/mending standpoint). They all are a blast to fish on small creeks for wild trout. I personally like the SPL and the SLT better than the TXL. However there are plenty of people that like the TXL better. Neither rod is “better” other than what the user prefers in a rod. The point is fish what you like, don't worry about what they are called and have fun!

I think they are called "tinkertoys", but you can catch fish with them, and like "tinkertoys", they are fun to play with. My go to salmon rod is a TXL 000. ;)

Seriously, it doesn't matter what you refer to any rod as. I name my main squeezes, with one 4 weight 10 footer being referred to as the Decimator.

As old Bill S said:" What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet"
"Should you cast your fly into a branch overhead or into a bush behind you, or miss a fish striking, or lose him,or slip into a hole up to your armpits-keep your temper; above all things don't swear, for he that swears will catch no fish."

"What is love? Is not love not unlike the unlikely not it is unlikened to?" The Ladies Man.

That is what I wisper to my sweet sweet wisper of a delicate little rod when I am with her on my favorite wild trout creek. With her tiny length, and her gentle soft touch... we play... Dancing like two drunken lovers.. her 1.5" reel cant even take the entire length of my... line... softly her tip dances with even the slightest bump of a trouts hungry soul. She tosses a fly so delicate... as to not even ripple the dead still water... alone with her I wait... hahahahah :D

I guess I need to get one of those ALN rods next and put some of those browns on it!

Nice signature there Sasha... I guess you couldnt take Craigs advice.

Have fun.....Might make a great "chest pounding" opportunity...heaven knows, you cant pass on that!

And of cource.... I am no longer ignoring the subtle jabs... so I guess this is how its going to be on here.

I guess I will have to change mine again... I though you guys were able to take Craigs advise... but again... I will always respond in kind...

Check out my new signature... should be right up your alley.

Oh and just so we are clear... the Hardy Aln is the bestest ultrlight fly rod ever made... my daddy told me so hahahahahahhahahahh

You kids are a joke...

Well I will translate it for you...... It means Shut The Fu*k Up...... Chest pounding really? I really don't think that posting reports is chest pounding but YMMV. I am sorry if you are all butt hurt about my sig line. Personally I would think that you would be happy that someone else might try out the rod you love oh so much. I guess it must be that time of the month or something.
