Scientific Research

Postby NorcalBob » March 18th, 2010, 4:07 pm

Chris has landed a pretty good gig. The pay and benefits sucks but he gets to spend a lot of time in the field collecting scientific data. While most of the time he's using professional scientific equipment to collect data, every now and then he gets a primo assignment to collect scientific data in a fun way---while holding a fly rod!!! :o
Chris' fisheries research company is working on some pretty cool and relevant fish topics----on this project they go out in the field and collect data on fish populations in this Central Valley River. Armed with a fly rod, he fishes, and when he connects and lands a fish, the scientific research begins. On this day he invited me along (unfortunately I don't get paid-but at least Chris does! :booty: ) to float a river and help collect scientific data. After he catches a fish, they place it in this custom built holding tank and take a picture. When he gets back to work, he downloads the picture into a database that takes the image, and using the orientation marks in the background, "maps" the fishes spotting pattern and loads it into a database and classifies the fish. The fishes spotting pattern is a unique mark, much like a human's fingerprint, and can be used to identify a specific fish. By tracking each specific fish over time, they can gain insights into the health and number of fishes in this tailwater fishery.

I am so jealous. I would kill for that job right now.

Ohhhh, not every job is this good. :bananadance: :bananadance: :bananadance: :bananadance:
Ask Chris about stripers jizzing all over him, and cleaning thousands of lampreys from fish traps (but he does like the job)!!!!
As far as killing for the job, well it's low pay, no benefits, and he gets furloughed every 90 days (so the company don't have to pay benefits)!!! Oh yeah, it also requires a college degree!!! :gun: :gun: :gun: :gun: :gun: :gun: :gun: :gun: :gun:

Doesn't matter what it pays, if it pays a dollar a day, it's more than I get paid to fish, and I'd consider it well worth the effort. Nice gig, to be sure. That fish looks kind of skinny for its length though. Hopefully he lands some fatter brothers.

Nice job while you're young, and you can probably work your way into something better in the long run. Congrats to him!

I am still good for that job by the way. The only thing that might freak me out is jizzing stripers but I'll get used to it. Lampreys are also kinda slimy and gross but hey! Sadly this is better than what I do!

The prices we pay for living our dreams! Even if he only does this for a year or 2 the knowledge he'll gain will be magnificent. And he's getting paid for it and can probably get another job in the meantime if he so wishes.

Keep us up to date on this Bob!
