Honey blame theophilus. That's my story and I am stickin to it!!!!!! Well.....Doug can't take all the blame Chiaki gets a good piece of it also.

Just ordered a Sherline metal lathe and several attachments and its all theophilus's fault. I have been mulling over getting a metal lathe for several years. I want to make as many of the rod components for my rods as I can,. Never acted on getting the lathe until I started conversing with Doug. He re-lit the fire with his beautiful work. If his work wasn't top shelf, I never would have jumped into the fire. So when my wife boots me out of the house, I am taking my lathe and moving into Doug's garage. I will have nobody to blame when I start building my rod shop in a couple weeks. That's all my fault.

With so many talented craftsmen on this forum, I have to throw my hat in the ring to try and get to their level.

Who did I miss? Throw em on here so we can reconize them for their gifts/ talents.

Congrats on the lathe. Can a forge be far behind? Don't forget that fly tying table that Rick built. Furniture/cabinet maker should be added. I know there are others that build rods and brew beer and some fantastic fly tyers that could be added as well. Oh, and let's not forget photographers. You are right, lots of talent here and if I had had more than a half cup of coffee my brain might be able to remember a few more for you list.

I've been in Dougs garage, you'll have to do an addition if you think you can live there with your lathe!!!LOL

hate to tell you this, but the lathe is the cheapest part of the deal!
wait until you start buy all those "gotta haves"!

I own at least one of every chuck Sherline makes! (do the math)

But the stuff you can make is incredible!
And with the vertical mill attachment, you will have a small mill, that is the way I got started.

Joe Martin (owner of Sherline), has solved every machining problem you can think of for the small home shop machinist!

Oh just great Bob !!!!! That's what I figured, but was in denial until you had to go and confirm it. Hopefully custom rod orders will cover the tooling cost. As soon as I get the $$$$ for a customer Bamboo I am building, I may start sniffing around the mill attachment. Is the 8 way directional too much for the simple projects I would like to do? Example: reel making

I did order the Sherline 4400C which is the bigger lathe with a bunch of goodies to go with it. Also had them include the knurling tool.

Wished you and Doug lived closer. Need a couple of mentors.

Pete, you can do anything with a lathe and a simple 3 Axis mill, the 8 way is just a bit over the top, and if you want, I believe I have an extra milling attachment that I would be more than willing to loan you to try it out.

I would highly recommend these two books, there is a ton of knowledge for not a lot of money, as in bamboo rod building, it is all about the setup, and between these two reference books, they will really get your neurons firing!

What a surprise!!! My lathe, that was suppose to be shipped yesterday, arrived yesterday . I am being a good boy and am not playing with it until I get the mounting base finished. It feels like Christmas at my place. Lathe arrived and Monte dropped off a vacuum pump at the same time. The vacuum pump will be used to stablize wood for reel seat inserts and impregnating Bamboo blanks. Hopefully get to start building my rod shop next weekend. What more can a boy, who refuses to grow up, ask for?

Way to go theophilus!!!! Drag me into your addiction .

Boy, if you miss a few days checking in on this forum, look at all the changes that take place!

Pete, if you show the same craftsmanship using the lathe that your presentation boxes show, there are some neat things ahead. And some fun times for you as you turn an idea into hardware, with YOUR imprint on its design. They won't look as flawless and uniform as what you can buy, but that's the whole idea, isn't it. Be sure to show us what you come up with!

But a quiet reminder- safety above all else. Safety first, last and in between. An anecdote- I was turning some reelseats on the lathe recently,it was cold in the garage so I had on a hooded sweatshirt and didn't notice that the drawstrings for the hood were dangling just inches above the whirling chuck!! If they had caught, it would not have been pretty. Ouch.

So have some safe fun...
