Oxygen depletion is the likely cause according to the DFG and the news peeps.

You're right, I heard about this on the radio.... crazy! apparently the high winds got 'em stuck in that small area and they depleted the oxygen from the water and I'm assuming the winds created a strong current and they were stuck and couldn't leave.
The seals and sea birds are having a blast right now it seems....

That's really sad. It's happened before, but it never did when it was a great fishery.
I caught my first fish there. When the Bubble Hole still worked, bonita ran all year.

That depleted oxygen story sounds fishy to me. 
My theory is, Charlie Sheen took a swim in the harbor, and all the fish went belly up from his awesomeness.

King Harbor is where I really started my saltwater fly fishing. We used to have exceptional days around the bait barge and the bubble hole. What I wonder is what chased them in there.

Hey Bill,
We fished the harbor too in the late 70s. Didn't cast just trolled around with sinking lines. Those bonito sure could tear up a Pflueger and make it hot!
Even nailed a couple of firecrackers that day.

We did too, Cliff. We had some great days, catching fish after fish. They would put my old 10 man raft in the sling and put it in the water for us and we would park off the bubble hole, or bait barge. We tied a lot of Ned Grey's streaker patterns, and got the occasional bass or yellowtail. Mostly we hooked bonita and mackeral, but we didn't care. Been decades since I fished there.
