Ninja Bass Fishing Tips

Postby SaltyFresh » May 15th, 2011, 5:52 pm

Hi guys, so Ive caught my first few fish recently(surf perch).
So im still a newb, and still learning how to cast.

I plan on going ninja fishing for giant bass at night, we have a couple spots off the radar that hold 7lbr's...

Any recommendations on flys?
Leader size?
Should i use sinking or floating line?
I have 2 spools, 7wt floating and 6wt sinking.

Thanks in advance.
Anyone wanna roll?

Aren't you on the wrong forum for NINJA bass fishing? Isn't that where you sneak in where you're not supposed to be and catch fish where there's no fishing and then post pictures with gang signs and bandanas? :D

I do have some advice...don't get caught.

Wow...Settle down man.. some of these guys go out and fish ponds in buisness parks and golf coarses for BIG fish. They have fun doing it and at the end of the day its fishing..They still C&R and I bet if you were told your local Golf coarse had 10lb cutts in it's pond you would sneak in a flyrod in your golf bag for a shot at a trophy... you would post your pics and show a thums up...Not sure thats a gang sign...Do gansters even fish? hahahaha

Edit: After reading my post I wanted to make it clear that in no way am I trying to be argumentative just that the ninja guys should have a place here to..After all he was asking about a fly rod! ;)

In general, ( there are of course other exceptions) once you start using your fly rod to target fish outside of the Trout / river world your basically just trying to mimic the tactics the conventional guys are using.
I've said this before but a fishes behavior does not change depending on what kind of rod you hold in your hand.
So whatever was working for you during the Ninja sessions fishing conventional are the tactics you want to try and employ fishing a fly rod.

It sounds simple because some tactics are easy to duplicate with a fly rod while others are not but that's what makes using a fly rod interesting and challenging.

Conventional top water tactics fishing with spooks and ect will = floating line and poppers.
There is a Zara spook imitator fly you can buy to walk the dog late at night although you might find it hard to cast on a lighter setup.

If you were jigging creature baits then you'll want to fish a sinking line and find a fly that resembles a creature bait using the same fly colors that were working for you before.

Good luck and wear your running shoes.
One last tip from back in my juvenile Ninja days. Have a place already picked out to throw your rod if it looks like your going to get caught.
This way if you get busted they can't confiscate your gear. ;)
Somebody just back of you while you are fishing is as bad as someone looking over your shoulder while you write a letter to your girl.

Yes! Exactly!

But I do think in some of those exception cases, the fly setup has an advantage and that's being able to control the line directly with your hand. Slow dragging baits on the bottom, twitches, *, and long sweeps can be done with a fly setup in ways you just can't do with conventional gear. With the gear, you usually have to use your rod to do the action, which works well for certain cases. And I don't think you can re-create the action a clouser type bait pattern makes when stripped with conventional gear. Reeling up the slack is what messes it all up. And for the same reason, you'd probably be able to do much nicer "walk-the-dog" type topwater retrieves.

I guess what I'm getting at is what I've been wanted to do for a while but haven't had the chance to, purists cover your eyes... taking traditional bass baits and fishing them on a fly rod. Shocking, I know, but throwing a Senko, or a lizard/crawfish plastic with a fly setup would work great. You would have so much more control on the action. You also delete the annoying step of having to reel in slack after supplying movement by sweeping the rod tip.

The single largest disadvantage for fly fishing bass is getting the bait in certain tight spots. It's much easier to pitch baits to structure, into coves, and under docks with conventional gear.

Also, various density lines are perfect for fishing suspended fish. Not so easy to do with anything besides a suspending crankbait. Great for the Fall when the fish key in on the shad balls in deeper water.

So, ya, do what Jon said, fish similar baits (if not the same!) in similar ways. Take your sinking line and tie on a 6" Roboworm and drag it along the bottom in the weeds or the shallow banks.

Thx guys for the tips. I will bring my mouse tail looking flies i purchased and imitator worm
Flies as well.

I always practice c&r, and always very respectful overall. Fishing is fishing, and i just want to have fun. As far as the ninja bassin goes, knowone will ever know I was even there, i don't trash peoples property.

Hopefully ill be posting pics of some toads soon. Maybe this week. :)

Some great info on "baits" to use. ;) I would agree with most of the fly and lure suggestions, and comparisons. One thing you hear about a lot, is using dark baits, that make noise or vibrations. Incorporating that in flies is as simple as adding rattles. The "fly tying", glass rattles are fine, but look at the conventional lure rattles. They make more noise, and at a different pitch. Short of using spinner blades, vibrations would be tough to incorporate. Easier method would be to tie flies that push a lot of water. Big hair bugs like Dahlbergs, big buggers, or even something like Todd's Wiggle Minnows. Personally, for the fun factor, I'd wake a dark mouse pattern. Making sure I pause often.

I have noticed a transition period from evening to night. There can be a excellent bite in the evenings, all the way to dark. Once it goes black, for whatever reason, the bite shuts down. Very few times have I caught any fish once the lights go out. After _some_ time passes, the bass seem to get active again. I'm sure this is not universal, but it's what I've experienced. I have never lasted long enough to fish late into the night, or very early(before 4) in the AM.

I can understand the your rational but it still sounds like illegal trsspass and poaching to me. If you want to do it I really don't care but I don't see why you would want to post about it.

Gee Tom......those that know me call me Jim...not Man. The advice was sound. The first sentence was also correct. No, I don't sneak into places that are posted or don't allow fishing under the cover of darkness or out of season just because there are BIG fish there. I did that (sneaking around) for 28 months in the Central Highlands of Viet Nam and was quite good at it but didn't take trophy pictures. When you go where you are not wanted or it's posted....it's illegal. Calling it some trumped up, macho name doesn't change what it is or make it better and IMHO has no place here.

Well I guess I dont know you and maybe I shouldn't have left out the "wild" when addressing you. However Jim as I mentioned I wasnt trying to be argumentative..to each his own right.?.We shouldnt assume that someone who is fishing a pond that isn't meant to be fished is a "gangster"..Maybe just maybe..someone who enjoys fishing with an extreme twist..I myself wouldn't do this form of fishing because I just dont have a set big enouogh to attempt it!Thanks for your service in vietnam. And maybe Well bump into eachother on the water some day! I'm really not a * I promise..
