Ultralight Madness..Questions Answered, Myths Debunked

Postby flybob » August 1st, 2011, 8:35 am

So, as I was researching my latest Rod acquisition, I stumbled upon on of the best resources I have found to date on Ultralight Fly Fishing and all things associated! Now of course, we have our OWN resident UL Flyfishando/Addict in that of the good Dr. Creek and not to take anything away from him and his contributions and knowledge, it is refreshing to find an individual who shares the same passion as the good Dr. with a site that dedicates an entire department to the MADNESS!

This was the ONLY site I could find with any decent information on the rod I was looking to buy, one of the ORIGINAL Ultralights...the ORVIS Superfine 1wt from 1987!

I have spent a couple of hours reading all his articles on the subject, obviously only one man's perspective, but it pretty much mirrors much of what we have learned to date. The bonus is a lot of good info on the rods, reels and lines that are available and suitable for UL applications.
I have bookmarked it as there are many more articles I intend to read on Warm Water Fly Fishing.

So Here is the Link:

have fun!
btw.....I did get the rod along with a new Orvis CFO I reel and extra spool made by Hardy of England!

WARNING to Dr. Creek! He is obviously an ORVIS GUY!

It's been a while, but I've read some/most of the articles on that site. Great resource for UL fanatics, or guys just wanting more info. Anyone getting into UL fly fishing can benefit from his site.

I may not agree with some of what he says, but that's just my personal beliefs/preferences. Mr. Byrd has built his opinions on experience, so you have to give him his due.

What rod did you get Bob?

Yup read that guys stuff a while back. People are going to think what they want to; no matter what. There will be those that go ape crap when you fish bigger fish with light rods. My thoughts are F' em :bananadance:

The more important topic is: What rod did ya get dude?

So does this mean I am finally joining the ranks with the building of a 1wt Tiger Eye rod? I do have a question about lining a 1 wt. Do you line it a size bigger (2wt) or find a 1 wt line....Do they even make a 1wt line?

I read a lot on that site before pulling the trigger on my Superfine 1 wt.

I almost bought a TXL 1 wt, but was able to get the Orvis for a bit less moolah.

I think Flybob got the 1987 Superfine 1 wt with CFO reel for probably less than what I paid for my Superfine/BBS 1.

YOU SIR Apparently did NOT read the articles on the site!

Yes Jim, a 1wt is consindered a UL! And yes there are a few 1wt lines out there, and No you do not have to "Line Up" if you can match your rod to a line!
I have a somewhat noodly 1wt, which I use Orvis Superfine Line on and it is remarkable stuff! Now if you have a TXL, you may want to look at the Sage line, the mass of WF line is distributed a little differently to work with the faster action of the TXL. YADA YADA YADA.....it's all out there, and as always, it just comes down to YOUR casting style and what feels good to you.
Since I fish primaily close quarters, the MORE forward distribution of the mass on the WF Superfine loads the noodle with less line out, hence better short casts. It all comes down to Physics.....dang, and I thought I would be an ODDBALL in the fly fishworld!
