New fly line?

So I haven't bought a floating line in like 3 years now. Besides for my 0wt, where I didn't really have to make a choice.

I want something for my Winston WT 10' 4wt (beautifully wrapped by Jon Stanberry, btw). Thinking Sharkskin? Is it worth the price? The rod will have a streamer attached about 50% of the time (i'm a gangster). I always go with double taper because it's two lines for the price of one.

Most of my lines have been Rio, for one reason or another.

By the way, what's up with all these fly lines in the $70-80 range now? It seems like they go up every year. I remember not that long ago when I got into fly fishing the top of the line fly lines were between $40-55.

I like Rio Gold but they're you're right, lines are super expensive now. If you don't want to pay full price though, you can always wait until they're liquidated. Sport Chalet in La Canada drops the price regularly on lines.

If you want to support Dave he sells Airflo lines and from what he's told me as well as getting a chance to check them out, they're long lasting lines. Definitely check them out. I think he likes the Ridgeline...

I have 3wt sharkskin loaded up on my 2wt and I really like it. Don't know how it handles in the bigger sizes, but it shoots really nice for me. Super quick line going through the guides, and I like the sound it makes. Not to mention the dull grey color that doesn't reflect too much light is great on small streams in shallow waters.

That said, I normally go with Rio lines as well. They seem to hold up better than any other lines I've used.

Here are a few top lines at blow out prices. I think you want to stay away from the lines that are ½ wt heavier than a standard line for your rod. Winston’s WT cast best with true weight lines. I agree that just about anything Rio is good but all the known brands are decent. In other words, Sage, SA, etc. Two lines stand out for me: Cortland's Precision lines and the Rio "Grand" series. I am guessing that we're talking just floating correct? The Cortland ones can be found at good prices and I really like them. Full sinking lines and sink tips are a whole other discussion. Finally, I have used the Sharkskin ones but am just not sure if they are "the answer". Got rid of mine.

The knock on the Sharkskin lines is they will tear your fingers up, due the the rough texture. If you're planning on pulling streamers a lot, this could be a problem. I have a Sharkskin Magnum Taper for topwater bass and stripers. I used it twice, then quit using it. I didn't care for the taper, and how limp the line was.

This was posted a little while ago. I've bought a few Sage lines and thought they were good lines.

I like Rio's Gold, and use it for dries, to streamers. Also like Airflo's Ridge, Trout.

Sharkskin lines are very noisy in the guides and I never liked them (plus they used to retail for around $100--not a cheap line).

I use Rio, Cortland, Sage, and Scientific Anglers lines and all have given me good performance. I assume you'll be using this 10 foot rod primarily for nymphing? If so, I'd look to the Scientific Anglers Mastery GPX, Cortland 444SL, Rio Gold or Grand, or Sage Quiet Taper II. I like all of them and generally buy whichever one is on sale. I try to avoid buying them at their retail $70+ prices. Currently there are sales at cabelas on certain flylines and as fly addict said, also at Madison River Fishing Company.

I bought the Airflo supple delta from David. Perfect for my Winston. Not affected by cold either.

I don't like streamers on floating lines, but that's just me.
