First off, if you plan to buy new, you really only have two choices right now. The HD Hero2, and the HD Hero. The HD Hero is on sale at GoPro right now, and probably gone by the end of the year. You might find a new, discontinued model(older the the HD Hero), but I would not recommend them. Video and picture quality is going to be noticeably lacking compared to the newer models. The HD Hero has the same quality video as the HD Hero2, but the picture quality is not the same. 5 mp = HD Hero. 11 mp = Hero2. If you shop around, you can find package deals that will save you more $ than buying the camera and wanted/needed accessories separately. I've been using the chest mount since I bought my first GoPro. For fishing footage, I prefer the view it provides over the head mount, but it's not perfect. Your hands can obstruct the camera's view, and you can bang your rod/reel against the housing.....which you can hear in the video. The camera is relatively simple, and user friendly, but there is a learning curve when it come to the camera's operation, and menu.
There are some new cameras out that are trying to grab their market share. I haven't researched them, but it might be worth checking out. My guess Sony's new offering will be one to watch.
