If you are going to Bishop...gas

Postby fflutterffly » February 24th, 2013, 7:16 pm

This trip gas cost us around 100.00 round trip. Gas at Fort Independence was 3.98 compared to the casino at 4.12. Fishing was great. Caught and caught and caught. Go Now.

Also you do the math: Rooms at Creekside Inn are 109.00 a night. Subtract cost of your breakfast at Denny's for two is around 15.00 and your dinner out, for two is around 25.00 . Creekside Inn has a great full breakfast, a little sum-thin at 5:00 Pm (chili, salad, soup) and cookies at 7:00. This brings the cost down to around to $65.00 for the room, which in a beautiful place and a great night sleep is priceless. Check it out and let me know if I've done the math right. For the two of us we did this weekend (2 nights) for $300.00 cuz karen gambled.

Go catch fish!!!

Ah yes, Creekside Inn, the place that wanted to throw my family out on Christmas eve many years ago because my baby crawling on the floor made too much noise for the guest below us. No, I don't think I'll be staying there - they can rot in *.
Buy a box of danish or muffins and bring a small camp stove and a french press - breakfast for two for under five bucks. Stay at one of the cheap motels in town and you're all set and saving big bucks. :bananadance: Glad the fishing was good for you though!

I've noticed Papa holding back as he's gotten older. Whew......

PVR in the A-frame for $10 a night. :FIRE: Bring food from home with local purchases being a pound of Looney Bean Dark Roast, Schatt's chocolate custard donuts, and either a BLT or bacon & egg burrito from Mahogany Smoke Meats. If I'm splurging, I'll stay at Brown's cuz they have hot showers....

Yes for all of you who don't stay in hotels... I understand. but for us who do this might be a sound investment. I can cheep out with the best of them... sleeping in the car, ground or tent. But I've finally hit the wall and think that IF YOU DON'T WANT TO GO CHEEPO this might be an alternative. I've never had a situation like PaPa's, but I've got to say that was really off base by the Creekside Inn. On the other hand I've had nothing but great experiences.

The Elms. Cheap, no hallways, and no "upstairs."

Sorry to hear about the bad experience at the Creekside Inn Papa Jon. I would have never stayed at the motel either if that happened to us.

I've stayed at the Creekside Inn about a half dozen times and really enjoyed every time I have stayed with them. Never had any noise issues even when we stayed with our little guy who was crawling at the time.

That's Landon at the Creekside Inn back in September 2010.

He's was full of energy back then, and even more so now. We didn't have any issues or complaints from the motel management or the guest. I know the Creekside used to be part of the Best Western chain of motels, now I know they are a independently owned and not part of Best Western anymore.

I guess it's like anything around us, whether it's a motel, hotel, restaurants, ect.... We could have bad experiences and vow never to go back, while other people could swear by the place to be paradise and the best bet in town.

I had one bad experience at Outback Steak House and vowed never to go back, while my girlfriend loves the place and always wants to go, I just tell her never again, just from one bad experience.

Oh yes, I wrote a complaint letter to Best Western. Their reply made it even worse. It started off something like this: 'We're sorry you had a bad experience at one of our hotels. Understandably the manager had a different version of events than yours.' To me, that's just a polite way of saying that I'm a liar. Then they went on to say that while it is a chain, each hotel is independently owned so there was nothing they could do. So, I haven't stayed at a Best Western hotel since then either, except once when it was unavoidable.
Anyway, that was my experience there, YMMV. It's too bad that there isn't a good alternative in Bishop if one wants a slightly better quality hotel. La Quinta isn't bad and has a decent breakfast (waffle makers, muffins, etc.) and it's a bit more modern than the Elms, which actually is a pretty nice place for a lower end motel.

The Elms has been our place of choice with rates that are very low. We brought our own granola and yogurt for breakfast and El Pollo Chicken for Lunch. That leaves dinner and usually the cost is around $30.00 for the two of us. However, as much as I enjoy the rustic Elms I enjoy the quiet heater/A.C. of the finer places since I'm such a light sleeper and insomniac. La Q is also nice, as is "vaga", Comfort and Ramada but the rates of the hotels are climbing in Bishop. I'm thinking of staying in Big Pine if the rooms are less money... but than you have the cost of gas back and forth. OY!   Summer is no problem staying outside in our tent, but winter... I just can't do it.

That Holiday Inn Express by the park is pretty decent as well. Last time I stayed, I think it was $89 per night with a very good breakfast. I was surprised to find, amongst other things, biscuits and gravy. We ate pretty good, took some bagels, bananas, and yogurts in the packs for lunch, and were only on the hook for dinner, which was usually cheese, crackers, deli meats, and post-session carbohydrate replenishment drinks. We had 3 in the room; two beds and a rollaway, so it was very affordable.

Still, I bought the little camper for a reason and I gotta say, I enjoy it more than any room I've ever stayed in. There's something about closing out the day, sitting pensively around a campfire, and feeling all the internal knots untie themselves.

We did a Winter Bow trip last March, its the fish on my Avitar. We booked at the Creekside Inn, sat in the Lobby for 3 hours while they tried to figure out where our room was. Day shift gave our room away, so at Midnight, they sent us away with no where to stay. We stayed at one of the cheapo places up line st. WOW, talk about 3rd world country style.

Turns out they were filming J.I. Joe up in Bishop Creek that week, and it was the production crew that swiped in our room.

We told them we wanted to eat breakfast for the two days we were planning on being there, the obliged, so we ended up spending $35/night and sleeping in our full gear because we were afraid of the beds :) but we did get a hearty breakfast for two days free...

I also got a business card that says one night free, but I never used it, as the summer we camp.

HaHa....now that's funny

I've stayed at the Vagabond with the family as well. Not bad, but nothing to brag about.

I'm cheap so I generally don't fish overnighter's in the winter, and I just tent it in the summer!!!!!!!

But back to Ariel's topic, this gas thing is getting ridiculous. Time to carpool if possible fellas!

I have a 2009 Escape Hybrid that gets an honest 29.8 miles per gallon. It coast us around $85.00 for gas round trip. I'm mindful of my $$ as well and with gas prices soaring you've got to take your best bud fishing just to save the dough. This year I purchased a new tent and some really nice REI cots with the intent to finally camp out. Now the trips will be affordable.
