I've wanted to get one of their filter kits for about a year and a half now, Eric. Aside from the bag issue mentioned in the article you linked, I've heard of no other issues with them. Well, technically speaking, there is the issue of possible freeze damage if precautions are not taken when camping when temp fall to near or below 32° F. Of course, that's an issue with many types of filter. A buddy of mine (non fly fisher) just got a Sawyer setup about 2 weeks ago and I am looking forward to getting some hands on use with it this year.
How do you tie the fly to your hooks without killing them with the thread? I keep cutting them in half.

I'm using a Bota Outback (no longer made) that works pretty well. There is a company named Clearbrook that now offers the same product ($22) and I can still get a replacement filter for about $11 (gofastand light.com). You can make your own with a Nalgene ATB bottle ($5) and the replacement filter cartridge. One cartridge filters about 25 gallons, so I've got a long way to go. The cartridge only weighs a couple ounces.

How much are these Sawyer filters? Look like a good idea, their website has no prices listed.

I am really happy with mine so far. After reading the problems with the sawyer bag i picked up a 900mil. and a two lit. ever-new bag for it. This will be the filter I will be using on the golden trout opener.

That seems quite reasonable, considering the katadyn and others are at least $60 or more, and seem a lot bulkier with hoses and other crap. Might have to check these out.

I used one on last year's JMT trip. I still am happy with it. Instead of bags I use a 1L Smart Water bottle. They're easily obtainable at many grocery stores and gas stations and it's useful sometimes to have a hard bottle when gathering stream water. When it finally seems like it's falling apart, I just go out and buy another one. The Smart Water bottle was the easiest to squeeze from my experience. Just thought I'd let people know of a cheap almost free alternative.

Keep in mind that the filter is designed to fit most water bottles sold in stores as well.

Thats right, my buddy Tim just uses a couple of standard 1ltr water bottles.
