scam alert

this came from another board. I don't know how to verify its validity.

Scammer Alert
by........... April 25th, 2013, 11:57 pm

I was just informed of a person (and I use the term loosely) that has been scamming people and organizations for fly fishing and tying gear and then reselling the generous gifts. What really irks me is that he's claiming to be a disabled Veteran in need of gear to fleece people on several boards. He has also, apparently pretended to be a rep for Project Healing Waters and the Disabled American Veterans to scam suppliers out of fishing gear and tying materials.

He has been going by the name of NewTyer1 on several boards and his name is Scott A. Martin and he is from Virginia. An officer in the Virginia based PHWFF posted the information. This information has also been verified by a local chapter of PHWFFand posted on http://www.washingtonflyfishing.com .

He is or has been a member of the Virginia National Guard.

Ariel, from what I can tell this is real. It's unfortunate that such * are out there. Worse to know they are preying on our community. And criminal that they are further preying on vets in this manner and doing so by taking advantage of the generosity of people who truly care about the service those vets have given to us all. Hopefully he never shows up here. If he does, maybe we'll catch on early enough.

Thanks for the heads up.

FWIW, I found reports of him on a few boards doing a quick Google search. :fireangry: :fireangry: :fireangry:
How do you tie the fly to your hooks without killing them with the thread? I keep cutting them in half.

Man, that's a real shame. I know this board would have jumped in with both feet to help a vet. Glad you got wind of it. From PHWWW-

"This past weekend I ran into this guy who is taking advantage of PHW Supports and Volunteers for his own gain. On Monday of this week this “person” and I am being really, really nice used my name to try and scam free equipment from a fly fishing vendor that has been a Great Supporter.

I am (for once holding back) on what I want to call this “person” because I want to get the word out this him and to be on the lookout for his scam.

It has sadly come to our attention that someone is lying and embellishing their veteran status for personal gain in our fly fishing community.

Scott A. Martin, is contacting our GREAT vendors to ask for free equipment and then he turns around and sells those products for $$ gain.

He has also taken advantage of the kindness and generosity of our PHW volunteers by acquiring free gear under false pretences.

Not only does this disgust all of us who work so hard to build relationships with supporters and vendors for our Wounded Warriors, but it disturbs us that a veteran would do this to other fellow veterans.

We post this so that our dedicated supporters, vendors and volunteers are aware of this imposter and should stear clear of any contact with him. We don't want him taking advantage of anyone else." - Marty Laksbergs

I wondered about that poster after I saw he was banned from FAOL back in February. I knew he had requested and received a couple of rods from members over there, but suddenly he was out and no mention was made as to why. It would've been nice to have warned folks over there about the "why" but guess that it's not politically correct to out a thief publically.

UPDATE: Noticed FAOL put up a confirmed warning on this individual today and their administrator was taking action to permanently ban him.
