That is some bigger water so I would look into a 6 to 8wt for him.

Go big or go home. Leave the 3wts at home for the radiator leaks we fish here in So Cal and gear up for half pounders, salmon, trout that are measured in pounds not inches, and winter run steel. I agree with Stanberry: 6-8 wts.

Think of it this way, ROAD TRIP to help the son get settled...NO FISHING OR TESTING OUT the new gear of coarse. ;)
