Method To The Madness

The madness of the latest, and greatest fly rod.

And hey, how about that magma red color!

Some good deals are popping up on TCX rods that are being replaced by the Method.

What model is next on the chopping block.

God knows I love Sage rods (SPL, SLT) and think they're some of the best production-level rods made, but this is getting a little out of hand. I guess everyone does it, though. Business IS business. Wonder what's on tap for Orv...Orv...Orv... aw, I can't even get the word out of my mouth.

Sage is among the worst for stopping production on a good thing and not replacing it with something better. The sage LL series from the late 90's is among the best trout rods ever made. I have yet to find anything that compares to the 3wt and 5wt for fine presentations to rising trout. These rods are a dream to cast.

Yeah yeah. Whatever. BTW, I hear the model in the works to replace this one in what, two weeks, is to be called the SOL. Not named after our sun, but an acronym from the words Speed Of Light. Preorder soon at 1.800.IDBUYIT (1.800.432.2848) or call for more information at 1.800.IBELIEVE (1.800.433.5438).
How do you tie the fly to your hooks without killing them with the thread? I keep cutting them in half.

The good part is if you like a particular Sage rod just wait 5 years and buy it on discount! I can’t wait to get the Sage ESN 10’ 2 wt on close-out.

While I like to poke fun at the hype surrounding the release of ANOTHER new fly rod, I do think it's a good thing they are offering new things. Not only for their very survival as a company, but to keep things interesting for us, the users. How fun would it be, that year after year we got the same ol' graphite rods offered to us. Maybe slight tweaks in the tapers, with name and color changes. Personally, I wouldn't be happy buying a fleet of XPs, or LLs, even though I think they are great rods. I can now pick and choose across a very broad spectrum of rods.

........well, that is if I was still buying fly rods.

"ultra-fast fly rods" does make them sound like a tree prop, but I'd be willing to bet they are a touch softer than the TCX that they are replacing. Ever since the TCR came out, Sage has been making their "ultra-fast rods", a little softer with each new incarnation. Not to say they won't be stiffer than your average trout rod, but in terms of some of my older "fast rods", I bet they'll be more user friendly. Wallet friendly they ain't.

So far, the hype machine seems to be running at 1/2 speed. I've yet to read the super duper superlatives that the One launch spawned. This is disappointing. ;)

They rolled out the Sage Circa and it's much slower action. I threw that and it was way slower than the One, but I won't be affording the price anytime soon....
