Check out my Woodie...

Postby 1mocast » August 22nd, 2013, 6:06 pm

My Prince Woodie.

I was also in need of a net with a bigger hoop and a longer handle than what I have for float tubing. I was thinking of what comes close to the same size as fishing net? Well, I use to play a lot of tennis and have old rackets laying around so I bought a Brodin replacement net for about $25 and PRESTO!

It works great! And it floats too.

That's a pretty good idea IF you have a spare tennis racket. Otherwise you could have a 500.00 homemade net. ;)

I like it--nice long handle, too.

This gives a grand suggestion for a tennis racket or two that has been gathering dust.

Henceforth, Mark shall be known by thy conferred name of Prince Woodie. Go forth and make that wood smell fishy.

Some Recommendations:

1) All modern rackets are graphite composites. They are very light. The only disadvantage I see is if it gets dinged up, you might get some fiberglass splinters.
2) The Aluminum rackets from the 70's/80's would work great too.
3) Rackets come in 3 main head (Hoop) sizes: Standard (Think Spaulding Poncho Gonzales), Mid size and Oversized. The Woodie is an oversized head.

The woodie works great on the float tube. If you plan on taking it streamside it is a little bulky. Plus, I can see it now, "Whats that guy doing with a tennis racket on Hot Creek?"

That is a very cool idea. I bet lots of folks have old rackets laying around. Somewhere buried in the deep recesses of a closet, I have rackets from the old wood(Gonzales Laver era), to metal, to aluminum, to the new composites. Like old fishing rods, the old rackets have too much meaning to convert into a net, but the newer composites are fair game. :)
