September Photo Contest

Postby WanderingBlues » September 2nd, 2013, 8:09 am

Alright folks, Papa Hemingway is the inspiration for the September Photo Challenge. In 1939 in Ketchum, Idaho, he eulogized a dear friend with a fine, simple, and honest piece of prose. The highlighted verse is the focus of the challenge...

“He loved the warm sun of summer and the high mountain meadows, the trails through the timber and the sudden clear blue of the lakes. He loved the hills in the winter when the snow comes.”

“But, best of all he loved the fall … The fall with the tawny and grey, the leaves yellow on the cottonwoods, leaves floating on the trout streams and above the hills the high blue windless skies."

So, there you have it. It's your interpretation of what Hemingway was trying to capture. Because Fall doesn't start until Sept 21st, the Challenge will run until Oct. 21st, thus giving ample time to get out and about.

Up for grabs is a woodcut print from the the gallery titled "Rise"

Is this like your last one where the picture could have been taken at any time (any year) or does it have to be something specifically taken this fall?

OK, I'll share a few from my trip in Colorado. These were shot October 7 & 8th if that makes a difference.

This one from a high mountain creek, Rio Grande Cutthroat caught on a PMX......

Another high mountain creek in the San Juan's, fall colors had just started and not in full swing, and shooting into an overhead morning sun really dulled what could be captured.....

Oh, I don't know the first thing about photoshopping pictures, so the colors are what the camera recorded and not enhanced in any way. I guess I should learn as these pictures composition is good, but especially the aspen trees in the second pic could use some brightening to make them stand out more than they actually did. But that's the way it was and so maybe best left that way.

I haven't been on this forum as much since I moved to Colorado, but I have actually gotten out and shot some. Here's an entry from me, shot Sept 29th. I went up to catch the fall colors as they were just starting to turn on the Aspens. Brookies were starting to get active in the creek too.

And here's my 2nd entry. As the summer heat slips away, the cooler air has brought these guys out to play for the fall. I shot this on the South Platte in Cheesman Canyon. I had just pulled out my fly box to pick the first fly for the day, when this BWO landed on my vest. Started noticing more coming off the water, but no rises, so I went with an mercury beadhead emerger pattern which proved well for me, landing several fish throughout the day.
This was shot Sept 22nd.

Nice photos guys. Interesting edits as well. Unfortunately I will not be able get something in before October 21. If only the contest ended on October 31. I would have enjoyed a chance at wining the woodcut print. Oh well maybe next time.
