I'll be the first to admit that at one time I, along with some of my buddies, felt it easy to scorn this writer and passionate angler's frequent writings about local "secret" waters. Despite this, I admired his enthusiasm for all species and his incredible passion for the sport. He cared about the sport and worked hard for it. California lost a champion of the cause. I have been fortunate to have sat and chatted with Richard on numerous occasions over the years and always found him to be a kind & caring man. I was sad when i read of his Passing.. a Fine Angler and a Good Fellow Human has left...

Man, I feel like I was just punched in the stomach. Although Mr.Bean lived in my hometown of Hesperia, I never had the opportunity to meet him or his wife. Being a tyro fly fisher, I learned a lot of valuable tips from reading his articles in California Fly Fisher magazine and from his book Fly Fishing Southern California. I feel indebted to him as an unseen mentor –thank you Rick.
