River Man

River man, river man, let’s take to the stream,
Floating down the mighty Kern will make my dream
Put me over seams and pockets where the bows reside
I’ll cast my line, present my flies, where those beauties hide

That sandy bank at the turn where the sun’s caught by the trees
My son and I would fish for hours easing the day’s worries
And over there, beside that log, an eddy slows the water
Ol’ Joe and I fishing side by side brought in a trophy whopper

Now river man, if you don’t mind I’ll give my rod a rest
And kick back now to just allow those mem’ries I love best
By rippling sounds my joy abounds with visions from the past
That bridge up there I met my fair and offered my handfast

Port the raft and hold it fast so I can watch the river
The beauty, how its currents flow and gracefully meander
Not unlike life which ebbs and flows and eventually out to sea
My time is done and so my run on this river I hold, so dearly

River man, river man you’ve made my last request
Floating down the mighty Kern and now my life is blessed
It holds the future this awesome water so keep your trips a goin’
The younger cast their lines across as the waters keep on flowin’.

It’s been said that a picture paints a thousand words but I also consider that a few words can paint a thousand pictures.
A nice read.

This story was told to me by a fishing guide as we floated down the Kern River in his pontoon raft. The client was ill and wanted one more trip down the river. By the time he brought his client back to shore, the tears were flowing. I just filled in the rest of the story. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
