Train and fly fishing

Postby fflutterffly » February 19th, 2014, 9:11 pm

Rattling about in the grey of my mind is a memory of a train running along a river. Here fly fisherman can jump the train, both off and on, to fish. Where is this magical place?

You're probably thinking about the Durango/Silverton Colorado Narrow Gauge train. Here's a link to get you onto their site and you can email them. There was an article many years ago in one of the flyfishing magazines about this. I imagine you can still flag the train down.

The one that Mike mentions is by far the most famous. It is also used by backpackers to get dropped off and picked up and opens up a lot of remote trailheads that way. However, an awful lot of train tracks follow rivers, so I suspect that there may be other places where you could do what you mention, Ariel. Maybe someone else has heard of other options?

The Alaska state railway makes whistle stops in remote locations, but its' more for remote residents and other folks accessing back country. It's not intended for day trippers, cuzz at a minimum it will be a day before you see the next train.
