Yellowstone and Silver Creek Preserve

Postby fflutterffly » March 21st, 2014, 3:45 pm

I'm going to Yellowstone in June to fish with a group of guys from another forum. On the way back home we plan on cutting through Idaho and fish Silver Creek, and then continue on to Bend through Boise. My question is this: Does anyone have the fly tying recipe for the Morris Silver Creek Special. In addition Can anyone give us more advice on where to fish along the way.
Thanks and great fishing.

You can hit Bend's version of Silver Creek- the Fall River. Spring fed and beautiful!

I don't know if that particular fly really exists but a good book covering that stream is "Silver Creek, Idaho's Fly Fishing Paradise" and it can be found here:

http://www.amazon.com/Silver-Creek-Idahos-Fishing-Paradise/dp/087004382X/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1395450978&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=silver+creek+Idaho%27s+flyfishing+paradise

It can be a very rewarding stream or a very humbling one, depending on how you hit it.

You may also experience high water in Montana in June. It's not the month I'd pick to go there. July and August would be better.

Depending on when you are going in June you maybe still in runoff in Yellowstone. They have had about 150% of normal snow pack up there and runoff could last through the middle of June or later depending on how much snow comes this spring and when. You might call flyshops in Gardner or West Yellowstone as you get closer to going. 2 years ago they had runoff that lasted till August with snowpacks over 200%.

Thanks for the advice. I'll be fishing with Jim (Jim's fly shop) and the other guys from Flymph.com. The date was chosen, not by me, so I had no choice if I want to fish with these guys. I'm just glad to be doing this long trip.

Hope you get lucky and hit the Salmonfly Hatch. It happens usually middle of June and those fish will come up to eat them reguardless of flows. Good Luck !

The Henry's Fork should be in full swing by June, with lots of hatches. The Park waters may be high, but still fishable. It all depends on how the runoff plays out. Think PMD's, Caddis, and Stoneflies. I hope to up that way on the Fork and the MO about that same time frame :)

There are a ton of spots to fish out here in those areas. Shoot me a PM and we can discuss options :)
