Found this in the la times today. I've definitely daydreamed about la river chrome before.

Fish always lose by being "got in and dressed." It is best to weigh them while they are in the water. The only really large one I ever caught got away with my leader when I first struck him. He weighed ten pounds. —Charles Dudley Warner

Even though they came up empty, the fact they are looking gives hope. Probably can't expect much with such low flows on the creeks and rivers here in SoCal this year. although I guess it's maybe spawning season.

My dad's buddy caught one in the very early 1970's below the Hwy 126 bridge over the Sespe River in Fillmore, but that's the only one I've ever seen. Now the lower Sespe is off limits to fishing as well.

Well, what do you know? Look at this post from my surf fishing site:

This topic never ceases to amaze me. Thanks for sharing. I've worked with Rosi and she is super cool and super driven. John, your post reminds me of one on fishingnetwork.net a good 10 years or so ago of one taken in Dana Harbor too. I've taken a few stabs at the quest for one of these (legally) but regs and, of course, scarcity of fish make it a very tough mission. I have had a few fun moments and even led people to the fish when it was too far for me to make the drive - waaah. One of the things I ponder often is the remnant "steelie" genes that may persist above some of our local dams. That "hunt" may not yield monsters but is fun especially when there's a solid run after rain or runoff. As for proper ocean-run fish, well one day ...

local chrome

The article makes me think is stories I heard from my grand father in the 30's catching steelhead in different creeks and sometimes in the LA river. I spent time in the 80's looking for chrome on some of his old haunts and caught a few in and around Malibu and Ventura county. Would be nice to see them make a comeback.
