Welcome. Not quite sure what you are asking or where you are going. Are you going to backpacking above Lone Pine Lake (along the Whitney Trail) or are you fishing some reservoirs on the West side of the Sierras. As you know, each present a different set of circumstances and opportunities. A little information about your experience level and what equipment you'll be bringing along will give us another clue to how we might help you have a successful trip.

I can tell you that water levels in back country creeks and streams are at record lows, even this early in the year. Many reservoirs have shorelines that have diminished dramatically. Looking forward to that trip report as well.

we'll i'll call it like it is......i'm new to the sport...i 'm using a 5w-9ft w floating line....& i have a fair selection flys, you know the kind that are suggested as you start out....some of these, some of those....ect...couldnt name them all,but i did ok with this seleation on the owens last sept, near benton crossing rd.... anyways, maybe a recommendation on flys that can be used on the kings river would be a good start, hope this helps.....this is east of fresno, not 395....sorry about the lone pine referance, it's pine flat lake........and we'll be riding duel-sports bikes along black rock rd......no hiking, we'll need to keep a eye on our stuff...........thanks.

Copy. That helps clarify things. Having never fished the waters you'll be visiting, I will defer to one of our members who have. Looking forward to hearing about your adventure when it is over.

Keeping an eye on gear is the bane of all outdoorsmen. If you can sneak away, you have tons of options in that area - esp. if you are in reasonable shape....hmmm...even if you aren't. If you need to fish crazy close to your car, I have seen impressive evening surface activity right at the dam at Courtright; roadside. Most good moving water will draw you away from camp/car. All said, you are choosing a very pretty area.

Ah. Now it's starting to make more sense. First, "lone pine" was throwing me a curve, then the 650 reference I didn't understand.

I've done the Black Rock to Wishon drive. Not something I care to do again in a 4 wheeled vehicle, but it should be a blast on a bike. Wish I had fishing info to offer, but I did not fish on that trip. All I can say is, if you see water, fish it. Good chance there are fish in there. Courtright can be very good fishing.

Have fun! Let us know how it goes...
Fish always lose by being "got in and dressed." It is best to weigh them while they are in the water. The only really large one I ever caught got away with my leader when I first struck him. He weighed ten pounds. —Charles Dudley Warner

Well....for starters, we didn't realize there were soo many rafters using the kings river....we worked the assortment in the fly box and only produced large mouth bass with black woolies.....and this was upstream...? replacked everything and reset at wishon....bit late in the evening, with no success on the water...following morning we hit courtright, now this was easy pickings....green wooly w-bead and it was on.......released 6-8 and kept the stringer for afternoon lunch....best part?....didn't run out of fuel.... Were gonna head up above Huntington in a few weeks and attempt this again.....of course, i'll keep u in the loop.....thanks!!!
