Heading to Lodi.

Postby Image2325 » December 20th, 2015, 9:28 pm

Hey guys I'm heading to Lodi in a couple weeks and want to fly fish. I cant find to much info on the fishing, I'm gonna bring my float tube but would rather river/stream fish. Does anyone know the area? I wouldn't mind driving a hour or so.

There's a few lakes, but it's mostly about the Delta up there. Spicytuna is a born and bred Lodi local. Hit him up. Good dude.

I'd enjoy the Wine Trail more if I were in town. If you enjoy a good Zin, the Michael David Vineyard is exceptional.

I'm a native Lodian!

Typically the Mokelumne River opens on January 1st each year. It's a tail water with pretty good access and only about a 20 minute drive. I haven't looked into the details or regulations for 2016, but I'm 99% sure it will be open.

There are trout and steelhead. Here's a trip report from a couple years ago. I've only fished it a few times.

As Wanderingblues said the Delta is right here in our backyard, but in my experience it's pretty tough to access without a boat.

There's also the Consumnes, another tailwater, but given the drought and reservoir levels I expect it to either be closed or just poor fishing.

Some great stuff here. Jason, your older report is amazing. Years ago I got a taste of some early January west slope tailwaters and really was impressed. These are weird waters; mitigated by dams, often affected by quarries and levies but somehow, fish persist and I have seen some monsters with shoulders pulled from these. What's also nice is you can sometimes get exceptional weather. Man, you got me thinking!

I live in Lodi so here is my take. Mokelumne river below Camacho dam opens Jan 1st. There is lodi lake and park which is connected to the Mokelumne river. You can catch trout and bass in both areas. If yoy can get access to a kayak, your set. Lodi lake has rentals. The American river is open year round and has special regs so make sure you review them. Only a thirty minute drive from lodi too. The delta is great fishing but you want to fish from a boat.

Thanks for the help guys... Is Lodi lake freezing cold in mid Jan? I would be using my float tube.

It will be chilly, but manageable if you layer appropriately.
